I couldn’t get to the comic store last week, so we’ll just do both weeks now, since the pickings from both are rather slim.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4 - Joss Whedon just writes damn exciting comics. The guy has a gift for cliffhangers that keep making you want to come back again and again.  Even here, in the fourth issue that wraps up the very ( Read more... )

There hasn't been much keeping me interested this week or last. The Avengers story was kinda neat as it included Spider-Men and interesting plot twists in a group of people who are new and I by-and-large have no interest in. I'm having a lot of trouble with titles like Iron Man and the Mighty Avengers where in one issue we have Iron Man fighting cancer demons or some such shit and running around Manchuria while over in the Avengers Stark may or may not be dead and replaced by the new Ultron. I mean I know it'll probably get worked out soon but right now it just confuses and angers me... same thing with Silver Surfer: Requiem although I can cut it more slack since it's a mini-series and the Silver Surfer is awesome. I still can't tell what I feel about Omega Flight. Likely I'll be through with it by the next issue but Beta Ray Bill just showed up and I always liked that guy. The new Conan trade came out and I was all over that shit. I haven't read any of the new issues really, so I don't know how it's going to shape up now that Buseik and Nord are both working on other things. I really liked Daredevil and kindof liked the New Warriors but I agree that it's missing some kind of nuance to make it be unique and not just a poor-man's New Avengers/Runaways. Last week I picked up the new Silent War and I'm digging on that title more and more. But the pickings have been somewhat slim recently, with Daredevil and Invincible leading the pack for me. Let's hope this week brings us something good.

For the continuity of Iron Man being the cure for cancer or a girl robot, the "New Marvel" style is "timeline be damned, so long as it doesn't seriously screw with continuity." Also, think of it this way, this stuff isn't happening over 4 months, it's happening over hours or days in their time line. So just pick one, and say it happened first.

I forgot to pick up Silver Surfer. I love the idea of the character but he hasn't been well-written since the 60's.

I love how there's only on Canadian on Omega Flight, the premiere Canadian Superteam. Beta Ray Bill is cool, mostly because he's the only does of Thor we've got right now.

I missed the boat on Silent War, and now I can't find issues two or three anywhere, so I'll have to pick it up in trade. You may want to check out Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee's mini-series simply called "The Inhumans." Amazon should have it.

I wish Daredevil or Invincible wouldn't be good just one month as I'm running out of ways to say, "awesomely awesome."

The thing about the Silver Surfer mini is that it seems to completely disregard that he's the current Herald of Galactus along with... uh... star...thing... Star-lord? Starry Starerson. Still given the way the story presents itself it doesn't particularly matter to me. Still, if you manage to give it a glance don't expect any power cosmic blasts to the face. It's not shaping up to really be that kind of book. What it does have is pretty excellent characterizations of the FF and our silver friend so it's worth flipping through, at least to get the gist of it and decide if it's something you'd like to pick up.
You're right about shellhead though... and now that I think of it, I never really liked Iron Man. Fuck the only issues I ever had were the Jim Rhodes/War Machine run in which Stark was dead, or "dead," or something. I never even played as him in the Captain America and the Avengers arcade game! It was always Vision or Cap (people scoffed me picking Cap until they saw how fucking fast I could throw that shield, fucking up everyone's shit... Red Skull didn't have shit on me).

Maybe with this mini being introspective some serious character building can occur later on.

I'm really pissed that I missed the boat on Annihilation. I thought it was going to be bad, so I stuck with Civil War and not look at the state I'm in. I wish Marvel would drop the prices on the trades or at least release the softcovers before we go head long into the new cosmic cross over.

Am I wrong in thinking that these hardcover trades are a relatively new thing? Maybe I've only recently become one to wait on trades to be released so it's possible that I've just been oblivious to it but it seems like there's a hell of a lot more in hardcover these days encompassing titles that I'm not sure really deserve them. I mean, the comic issue itself is collectible, not the trade, so why make it all fancy? I mean if it's something epic or generally regarded as groundbreaking I understand the desire for a more upscale model, but really, hardcovers of the New Avengers and the first 6 issues of Moon Knight probably aren't necessary. I think this is just leftover anger from having to buy the new Conan trade in hardcover so now it doesn't really match on the shelf with the others.

I'm right there with you on Annihilation. I had the good sense to start picking it up towards the end (mostly due to the cool covers and...Drax? The guy with the two knives who was really Kratos-esque) and now all I want is to get it all together and ease my fears about upcoming Marvel events.

On further review of my youth I have decided that the Swamp Thing Returns is both far better than the original and the Captain America flick making it my favorite comic-book movie from when I was a kid (I did not get to see Mask of the Phantasm until high school so it is not in the running).

The very first harcover trades I'd ever seen where the first arc of New Avengers, and the two collections of the Hush arc from Batman.

Obviously there are other comics, Year One had a hardcover release, and let's not forget 300, but just arcs from continuing series is relatively new.

I think I got that first arc of New Avengers our junior year.

But, yeah, this price gouging sucks, and now I'm behind on the next cosmic event.
