All Because of A Rumour
-x-x-x-
Naruto scrubbed his skin viciously, seething in anger. He had just returned from a mission that had almost turned into a disaster, but with great teamwork and the aid of his teammates, it had luckily been avoided. His abilities had been the key to their victory, but his jerk of a Captain hadn’t acknowledged his abilities, nor the effort he had put into the mission.
Naruto had been a member of Konoha’s ANBU force for full eighteen months and that entire time he had been put down and ridiculed by his squad Captain. He swore that his teammates were in on it somehow, but he had no idea what they could have told his Captain that would have made the man hate him so much. It wasn’t like it was about his status as the Jinchuuriki of Kyuubi, because no one in ANBU was aware of it. If his Captain had been after him because of that, he would have heard several insults, been spit on and banned from all the difficult missions, but that wasn’t the case. It couldn’t be, after all, as an ANBU member your identity was a secret, even to your Captain. The only one, who knew, was the Hokage.
As the blonde shut off the water, stepped out of the shower, and grabbed a towel to dry his hair, he swore to himself that he would show his Captain that he was worth something.
Uzumaki Naruto wouldn’t be looked down on!!

Itachi closed the door to his room, his forever perfect decorum preventing him from slamming the door. He was severely annoyed. Even before the young rookie had entered the ANBU forces, he’d heard information from reliable sources that the rookie was aiming high, and was going to take his position as the Captain of his team. Itachi wasn’t planning on retiring anytime soon, he was only twenty-three years old after all. He had a great career ahead of him, and he wasn’t going to let some eighteen year old rookie take his place in the team.
He had taken to needling the beginner, criticizing all he did, dragging his reputation through dirt, running him to the ground in practice and giving him assignments impossible to complete. Much to his ire, the rookie was taking his needling and criticism with gritted teeth, didn’t care about his reputation, was nearly impossible to run to the ground and didn’t stay down long enough for Itachi himself to recover, and completed his impossible assignments perfectly and within the given timeframe.
It seemed the rookies head was firmly in the clouds. Every day Itachi heard people laughing at the rookie’s expense, having heard him bragging about his supposed upcoming captainship, and how he would make Itachi do menial tasks like bringing his coffee and washing his laundry.
Itachi took a deep breath trying not to lose his temper and destroy his room in a fit of rage. Perhaps it was time to pay his family a visit? Nothing calmed him like a long conversation with his younger brother in their peaceful garden. Besides, his brother had considerable experience in rivalry. Perhaps he could come up with some ideas for Itachi to use on his mission to break the rookie.

A loud bang echoed in the cafeteria and the entire room full people turned their heads to the direction of the noise to look what caused it, going back to their dinner when they saw it had only been the rookie slamming his tray down to the table. He was muddy and dripping wet, his mask a little more than signed, and an all around mess.
Naruto weaved the signs to activate his ever present genjutsu which hid his features. No one was allowed to know each others identities within ANBU, which brought in the need to learn the genjutsu, which to mention, had taken Naruto ages to learn.
When the genjutsu was in place, he took off his mask and started to shovel food into his mouth, furious after his latest training session with his perfectionist prick of a Captain.
“Mah, rookie, don’t get your feathers so easily ruffled.” Inu, a tall man with light brown hair commented from the desk next to Naruto’s. “He’s just being prissy. He was the same to all of us in the start.”
Sending the man a glare, Naruto continued sulking.
“Just keep going rookie, you’ll see, he’ll acknowledge you.” A turtle masked man muttered, his mask concealing his malicious grin. “He’ll have no choice.”
Naruto glanced at the man and nodded slowly. Kame was right. He was good, and soon his Captain was going to have to eat his ridicule and admit it.
It was just a matter of time.

Naruto grit his teeth as one by one, his teammates got sent to high class training. He couldn’t rein his temper any longer though, when the Captain assigned him to laundry duty.
“Captain! I’m challenging you to a spar!”
It seemed to Naruto that the entire courtyard turned to look at him.
“Are you insane, rookie?!” One of his teammates, Tora, whispered furiously. “Just apologize, plead temporary insanity and do as you were told!”
Naruto was about to argue, but was startled into silence when his Captain spoke.
“Too late for that, Tora.” Looking to Naruto, the Captain nodded. “I accept your challenge, Kuma.”
Behind his wooden mask, Naruto grinned. “Just tell me when and where.”
The other members of ANBU shuddered in fear. If there had ever been any doubt that the rookie was insane, there certainly wasn’t any doubt now.
“Training ground nine. Right now.”
Never losing the grin, Naruto teleported onto the mentioned training ground, not surprised in the least that his Captain was already there when he arrived.
“All but dealing permanent damage and death, allowed.”
Nodding to the Captain, the blond haired youth took his stance. “Sounds good to me.”
For a moment the two stood in silence before, as if from an invisible sign, they exploded into motion. They started with taijutsu, slipping in the ninjutsu, and even having a brief battle using kenjutsu. It was only when the Captain resorted to genjutsu that Naruto froze, unable to break the illusion.
Stepping closer, the Captain hissed under his breath. “Not even able to break a simple genjutsu. Pathetic.”
He dispelled his technique, allowing the rookie ANBU to collapse on his knees.
Looking up into the condemning dark eyes of his Captain, Naruto growled. “Damn it, why are you looking at me like that?! What’d I ever do to you? You’ve always put me down and ridiculed me, and damn it, I want to know why?!”
The Captain snorted. “You come here with your illusions of grandeur, thinking you can take my position as the Captain, and-”
“Wait, wait, what?” Naruto asked, his eyes growing wide behind his mask. “I’ve never said anything about wanting to become a Captain. Why would you think that?”
Dark eyes narrowed. “You don’t want the position?”
“No.” Naruto said. “Not yet anyway. I wouldn’t know what to do. I need at least three more years in here to get the experience and respect required for the position of an ANBU Captain.”

At his subordinate’s confession, Itachi froze. Was it a trick, or had he been played by everyone else? Was the rookie really not trying to take his place? If that was true, Itachi had been making his life miserable for a year and half for nothing.
Crouching down to the rookie’s level, he asked. “Be completely honest with me now, Kuma.”
The shorter man nodded hesitantly. “Yes, sir.”
“Your intentions in ANBU are?”
“To protect and serve my village to the best of my ability and to give my life in the line of duty if so deemed necessary.” The rookie answered so promptly it couldn’t have been a rehearsed lie.
“And your thoughts considering your team, your current captain, and your position in the team.” Itachi insisted, dread filling his chest.
“My teammates are nice enough, although I wish they would call me by my code name rather than ‘rookie’. My Captain is an absolute prick, and is driving me insane with the lack of recognition, respect and trust. I expect to fulfill my duties to my village no matter what position I hold, but I am not eager to lead the team. I do not consider myself ready for such a task.” The still kneeling ANBU answered with near perfect grammar, obviously having been affected by the serious tone of his Captain.
Rage exploded in Itachi’s chest as the truth was finally revealed. He had been had. Someone had thought that pissing him off was a good idea.
Well… they were going to be proven very wrong.
Helping the kneeling ANBU up, Itachi swallowed his ever present pride and bowed. “I am sincerely apologizing for my behavior towards you for the entirety of your stay here in ANBU.”
The rookie visibly stiffened, with anger or shock, Itachi didn’t know, but decided to continue.
“I should have consulted you on the rumors I heard, but instead I took them at face value and tried to knock you down from your high pedestal. I understand if you wish to make a formal complaint of my behavior to Hokage-sama and have me removed from my position as your superior.”
The rookie tilted his head and sighed. “If I wanted to do that, I would have done it already. Just do something about the rumors and start treating me as I deserve to be treated and we’ll be fine, Captain.”
Sharingan eyes flashed behind Itachi’s mask as he nodded.
ANBU was a group of elite shinobi and kunoichi, not a group of gossiping old ladies in the market. It was time everyone in the force was informed of that.

Sasuke’s head snapped up from his readings as his brother walked past the veranda where he was studying with his teammates.
“Niisan!”
Itachi turned his head to glance at his brother and walked over with a tired smile.
“Studying hard little brother? You’re a Chuunin already, but still studying. What is it for this time?”
He nodded to his brothers teammates, causing the pink haired girl stare and the blonde to waive with a grin. They had all grown so much from when they had graduated.
Sakura was now a skilled genjutsu mistress, often creating even more complicated illusions than his brother who favored his lightning element over others. As for Naruto… well, he was still the ever optimistic, loud, orange blob, jumping around the village and making everyone smile. Even Itachi often found his mood lifted from observing the boy.
Things had changed for the blonde too though. Naruto had used to be a heavy hitter with no other particular skills that thinking on the fly and creating clones. You would never have believed it when they boy had gotten out of the academy, but today, the young Uzumaki was one of the best medics in the village of Konoha.
“The Jounin Exam. Sit down and study with us, Itachi-san?” Sakura requested. “You’re still a Chuunin too, right?”
The older Uchiha shook his head. “I have no desire to advance. I’m comfortable in my current position.”
Sasuke’s eyes flashed with mischief and he smirked. “Oh yeah, how’s it going with the rookie?”
Unnoticed by others, Naruto’s eyes shot to Sasuke before sliding to Itachi, who was now frowning.
“I was wrong, Sasuke. He does not wish to be in my position.”
Sasuke’s brows rose in surprise.
“Someone in the group found it funny to make me put him down and make him dislike me. Perhaps someone wanted him out of the group, or wished that I was removed from my position. Regardless, we have now settled the subject. I apologized for my misjudgment and was forgiven.”
Naruto’s eyes widened for a fraction of an inch. ‘That’s… that can’t be…’ Looking at the older Uchiha with a newfound realization, Naruto felt laughter of disbelief bubble in his chest, but quickly swallowed it. ‘Captain… is Uchiha Itachi. I’m sure of it now. I…’ Eyes widening slightly, Naruto grit his teeth to keep from laughing, ‘I called Itachi a prick to his face!!’
“Oh…” Sasuke sighed, in slight disappointment. “I guess you don’t need any more help with inventing new ways to torture him then. Too bad, it was fun while it lasted.”
Naruto stiffened and fought not to yell at his rival and brother in all but blood. ‘That goddamn bastard! No wonder the Captain’s needling felt so familiar, Sasuke was helping him! Grrr, you’ll pay bastard, you won’t know what for, but you’ll pay!!’
Itachi smirked and shook his head. “No, no more. Now, I have to go sign some documents, so study hard and get Jounin, little brother.”
“Pfft, yeah, yeah, paper-pusher-san.” Sasuke snorted, earning himself a slap to the back of his from a scandalized Sakura, neither of them noticing as Naruto got up and trailed after Itachi as the man entered the house.
-x-x-x-
Itachi stopped few feet short from his room and glanced at the blonde trailing after him.
“Was there something you needed, Naruto-kun?”
The blonde scratched back of his head, and sighed. “Uhh… I know we aren’t supposed to know, but… I kinda got it, when you and Sasuke talked just now… You’re Captain Ookami, right?”
Itachi stiffened. “And if I am…?”
Naruto grinned. “Then I guess I finally know why your taunts sounded so familiar, with your bastard of a brother helping you.”
At Itachi’s widening eyes, Naruto did a standard ANBU salute, “Kuma at your service, Captain Ookami.”
Itachi stared at the boy in disbelief before snorting in amusement. “No wonder you didn’t stay down no matter how hard I beat you to the ground.”
The blonde laughed. “It was a good try?”
The raven haired man shook his head and continued his journey to his room with a relaxed wave of his hand. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Naruto.”
The boy saluted with a laugh and ran back to the veranda, tackling his bickering teammates with a yell, getting two undignified squeaks from the two.
-x-x-x-
The trees of a silent forest passed by as a five membered ANBU unit made their way back into the village by jumping on the sturdy branches.
A silent thump echoed apart from the other sounds of jumping as one of the members of ANBU stopped to rest on a wide branch. The man’s breathing echoed in his ears as he braced himself against the trunk of the tree. His black gloved hand came up to press against his chest, vision clouding as his air supply started to run out.
Another thump and a slight jolt of the tree branch was his alert of his company, one alerted by the distressed spiking of his chakra.
The hand against his chest flashed down to his weapons pouch like a strike of lightning, bringing a kunai forward to defend himself.
“Captain.”
The voice was familiar but he could no place it. His body was trembling, his lungs burning with the lack of oxygen, and his eyesight was clouded black with the lack of air, but the hand holding the kunai was steady as it pressed firmly against the intruder’s jugular.
“Captain, it’s Kuma. What hurts? Will you let me help you?”
The ANBU struggled to stay conscious, the arm holding the kunai already numb.
“Captain, please. What hurts? Let me help, Captain.”
Still unable to place the voice let alone connect it to the name given, but unable to take the agony burning in his chest any longer, he dropped the hand holding the kunai, the weapon slipping from his numb fingers and falling down to the forest floor.
“A-Air!” He choked out, his hands flying up to remove his mask, but firm hands stopped him, gripping his arms tightly.
“Easy, Captain. I’m going to help you breathe. To do that, I need to use chakra. Do you understand? I mean you no harm.”
The chocking ANBU gasped for air, but managed to retain his sanity enough to understand the words of reassurance. “D-Do it.”
Immediately the hands restraining him left his person and only seconds later chakra flared and made contact with his. As the foreign chakra pushed through the wooden mask to form an oxygen mask made purely of chakra on his face, giving the inside of the wooden mask a green glow.
The ANBU coughed as air rushed into his lungs and readily let himself be supported by his unknown helper as he recovered his ability to breathe.
“Better now, Captain?”
He breathed in deeply and out slowly, ignoring the question. Slowly his eyesight started to clear and he stared at the ivory wooden mask decorated with red lines. His helper was a male, slightly shorted than him. The other ANBU member’s stance radiated concern and he could see that the man was ready to help him and to defend against him if necessary.
Keeping himself as steady as possible, he backed away from the other, taking note on how the man immediately tensed and let him go without resistance.
A bout of dizziness almost made him fall off the branch, but the other man was there, immediately steadying him.
“Easy does it, Captain. May I examine you? If it’s a poison rendering you unable to breathe, it must be drained from your system as quickly as possible.”
He took a moment to look at the other ANBU, searching for a connection between this masked man, Kuma, the familiar voice and the reason he was being called ‘Captain’ repeatedly.
Kuma… ANBU… mission… Captain… green chakra…
How could he have forgotten his only true friend in ANBU? The only one he could trust no matter what?
“Go on.”
Kuma made hand seals and slowly extended his hand towards the armour-clad chest.
“I’m lucid,” Itachi sighed and a pair of blue eyes flickered to meet his dark ones from behind the wooden bear mask before nodding and normal speed.
The blue eyes kept glancing at him in concern until the man tilted his head.
“You’ve inhaled a poison that makes it impossible for you to draw in oxygen without assistance. I will place a ball of chakra into your lungs to help you breathe until the poison liquefies and you can cough it out.”
Itachi nodded. “Thank you, I appreciate it.”
The man snorted. “Don’t give me that bullshit. As if I’d ever let you die.”
Behind his mask, Itachi smirked.

Naruto groaned as he was slammed against the wet, white tiles of the ANBU community showers. His lover was suckling on his neck and jerking his cock firmly, making the blonde shudder in pleasure.
“Fuck, Itachi… yes…”
The raven haired man smirked and bit down on the tan skin, marking the younger man as his, making the blonde shout out.
“Dammit, stop teasing and fuck me…!”
“So impatient, rookie-Jounin-kun…” Itachi chuckled.
Naruto growled and pushed the man away slightly. “I’ll show you a rookie…!”
Itachi grabbed the blonde’s shoulders and spun him around to face the white tiles. “Hands on the wall, Naruto-kun.”
“Oh fuck, yes…” The blonde moaned and did as told as he felt slick fingers enter him one by one, pushing back against them in desire. “Just put it in already, you know I like it when it stings a bit.”
Humming the ANBU Captain pulled out his fingers and pushed his erect cock inside of his lover, groaning as it squeezed him deliciously. “Tight as ever…”
“Ughn, move you damn tease… c’mon, it’s been a week since we had time to do this, please, just… do it.”
Feeling as impatient as his lover was, Itachi started to thrust in and out slowly, the pace quickly growing, the sound of the shower hardly covered their pleasured sounds and the slapping of their wet skin.
Naruto groaned and threw his head back, his hand dropping down to stroke his erection fast and hard as he felt Itachi’s cock slide against his prostate with every thrust. “Yeah… yeah… yeah…”
Itachi slapped Naruto’s hand from the pulsing erection and stroked him in time with his thrusts, groaning as it made the younger man’s muscles tighten around him. “Come for me, lover…”
The blonde shuddered and groaned, his cum staining the tiles, quickly being washed away even as Itachi’s cum filled him and spilled out when there was no more room to fill. “O-Oh fuck, yes…”
The older man pulled out and turned the younger around to kiss him lovingly. Sometimes it paid off to have the authority to clear out the showers to fuck your lover in private after a week of hard missions.
“Itachi… again… I want it again…”
The Uchiha smirked.
Life was good.
