Daniel shifted the notepad in front of him before glancing at the clock. His eyes widened a bit when he saw he was running late. Without a second thought, he closed all the books on his desk and stood from the chair. He needed to go back to his house and clean up before meeting Xander at the bar, which was going to make him a few minutes late

Heading to the bar Daniel had told him about, Xander parked across the street, checking how he looked in the rearview mirror before stepping out of the car and heading into the bar itself.
Looking around, he saw that it was busy but not overly so and there didn't seem to be too much noise. Glancing to his right he spotted another man looking around, possibly for him.
"If you're Daniel then I think you're looking for me. If you're not then -- we're going to forget this ever happened and I'm going to go over to that table and dig myself a little hole - possibly with a disco ball."

He looked toward the table Xander has motioned toward, then looked at him again. "How about we both sit at the table and not dig any holes," he said.

"Oh, but that's what I do," he replied. "I'm a hole digger. I also live with my foot in my mouth pretty much all the time." Nodding he continued, "But, I'm for sitting at least. I can do sitting. Let's...sit."
Moving to the table he had indicated, Xander pulled the chair out for his drinking buddy. "No matter the company, I'm a gentleman." That had basically come from growing up and being friends with Buffy and Willow and the brief, brief period of Cordelia.

"Don't worry. I have the same habit. My holes tend to me figuratively and literally," he said, glad to see Xander had a good sense of humor. Daniel's life had been much too serious as of late, and he needed something fun.
When Xander pulled out his chair, Daniel paused for a small second. It was strange to have someone else pull his chair out, but it liked it just the same. "Thank you, Xander," he said.
Once he was seated in the offered chair, Daniel gave Xander another smile. "Thanks for coming out here. It's been a while since I've had drinks with someone that isn't Cam. He's a friend and he and I come here sometimes, and he makes his wingman. So, it's nice to be able to come out and just enjoy myself without having to worry about whether Cam is getting some or

Xander took the seat across from Daniel, listening to what he had to say. "I don't usually make a habit of flying to see men from the internet but -- I don't know. I did." He chuckled. "Well, if it helps, I'll be your wingman tonight." He replayed what he had just said. "Actually, scratch that. I'll be your date. Because why would I want someone who looks as good as you to go home with anybody else?"

Looking over his shoulder, Daniel waved for the waitress to come over so she could take their orders. "I wasn't too late, was I? I got caught up in some research," he explained.

"I had a day that backed into our -- into this so I had to shower quickly." He brought his hand to his hair. "Yep, my hair's still wet. What about you? Good day at your classified work?"

When the waitress came over, Daniel ordered a beer since it was what he was in the mood for. He turned his attention back to Xander, and looked at his hair. "Still looks nice," he said. "It was boring with a lot of research type stuff. Only left my office to get junk for food lunch."

He took a drink of his beer and nodded at Xander. "Enough about my day. How was yours? Besides showing up for a date with wet hair?" he asked.

My day. It was in a word, hell." Literally, he had to save a girl from going to hell. That had been fun. "This one girl wasn't listening to anyone, she was being very destructive. Things were broken but in the end she came down on the side of reason..." He pursed his lips. "You know, boring stuff."

He sat back in his chair and listened to Xander. Taking a long drink of his beer, Daniel sat it down and softly laughed. "It sounded really boring," he said with a laugh. "Is this girl's last name Mitchell? She sounds a lot like my friend Cam - always doing stuff without listening to reason. You'd think spending majority of his time in medical would change his attitude, but it doesn't," he said before shaking his head. "Not that I'm any better with staying out of trouble."
Reply
"No, no. Her first name was Mitchell - which is really random. And coincidental. Mitchell Ryan. 15 and coming into her own all of a sudden after a year of something she didn't understand. Some of them fall through the cracks and we only hear of them -- well, when one of my friends finds them."

He furrowed his brow as Xander talked about helping a teenage girl. Xander had said his work was classified but Daniel was starting to become a little curious. "Do you work with troubled teens, then?" He asked. "I know you said it was classified so you don't have to answer if you don't want to."
Reply
"Some are troubled." That answer was truthful in it of itself. "A lot of the times, they can't handle circumstances around them. Circumstances they can't control. But we're there to prove that they can and that they can fight back." He looked up. "So to speak. They're not helpless pawns but they're not destructo-girls, either. They were put on the Earth for a purpose."

With a look of interest, Daniel listened as Xander spoke. He knew all about people being placed places - Earth and otherwise - for a purpose. He was curious, of course, as to what these girls' purposes were. After a moment of thought, he decided to push the envelope a bit. "I know all about people having a purpose. I know of people whose DNA is different just so they can do things others can't," he said in reference to the Ancient gene.
