Drinks with knew_youdlikeit

Daniel shifted the notepad in front of him before glancing at the clock. His eyes widened a bit when he saw he was running late. Without a second thought, he closed all the books on his desk and stood from the chair. He needed to go back to his house and clean up before meeting Xander at the bar, which was going to make him a few minutes late ( Read more... )

After dealing with a newfound slayer and security protocols he wasn't in favor of, Xander had enough time to shower and pull on a black t-shirt and jeans before heading out the door of his temporary apartment. Why Giles had wanted a slayer cell in Colorado of all places, he didn't know, but if anything, it was convenient in tracking the unwitting slayer at that ski shop - skis being thrown at him and all.

Heading to the bar Daniel had told him about, Xander parked across the street, checking how he looked in the rearview mirror before stepping out of the car and heading into the bar itself.

Looking around, he saw that it was busy but not overly so and there didn't seem to be too much noise. Glancing to his right he spotted another man looking around, possibly for him.

"If you're Daniel then I think you're looking for me. If you're not then -- we're going to forget this ever happened and I'm going to go over to that table and dig myself a little hole - possibly with a disco ball."

When the dark haired man approached him, Daniel gave him a smile when he introduced him as Xander. He then softly laughed and held up a hand. "I'm Daniel. It's nice to meet you, Xander," he said.

He looked toward the table Xander has motioned toward, then looked at him again. "How about we both sit at the table and not dig any holes," he said.

He shook Daniel's hand firmly, something his father had instilled in him when he was young before the alcoholism had set in completely. Subconsciously, Xander checked out the other man, his eyes traveling down and then up before his smile widened.

"Oh, but that's what I do," he replied. "I'm a hole digger. I also live with my foot in my mouth pretty much all the time." Nodding he continued, "But, I'm for sitting at least. I can do sitting. Let's...sit."

Moving to the table he had indicated, Xander pulled the chair out for his drinking buddy. "No matter the company, I'm a gentleman." That had basically come from growing up and being friends with Buffy and Willow and the brief, brief period of Cordelia.

As they shook hands, Daniel could tell Xander was checking him out. He felt a little self conscience since it wasn't everyday someone looked at him like that. When he saw Xander's smile, he found himself smiling back before a small chuckle escaped his throat.

"Don't worry. I have the same habit. My holes tend to me figuratively and literally," he said, glad to see Xander had a good sense of humor. Daniel's life had been much too serious as of late, and he needed something fun.

When Xander pulled out his chair, Daniel paused for a small second. It was strange to have someone else pull his chair out, but it liked it just the same. "Thank you, Xander," he said.

Once he was seated in the offered chair, Daniel gave Xander another smile. "Thanks for coming out here. It's been a while since I've had drinks with someone that isn't Cam. He's a friend and he and I come here sometimes, and he makes his wingman. So, it's nice to be able to come out and just enjoy myself without having to worry about whether Cam is getting some or

Literal holes, huh? He knew he was joking and glad for the rapport that was developing between them.

Xander took the seat across from Daniel, listening to what he had to say. "I don't usually make a habit of flying to see men from the internet but -- I don't know. I did." He chuckled. "Well, if it helps, I'll be your wingman tonight." He replayed what he had just said. "Actually, scratch that. I'll be your date. Because why would I want someone who looks as good as you to go home with anybody else?"

Daniel found his cheeks flushing at Xander's word. "You're pretty handsome, too," he commented before he softly snorted. "And, thank you. I only have wingman training, and would probably embarrass myself if I tried to hit on anyone here. Plus, I know a lot of the guys here, and they would just laugh at me, and I don't want to be laughed at in front of my date."

Looking over his shoulder, Daniel waved for the waitress to come over so she could take their orders. "I wasn't too late, was I? I got caught up in some research," he explained.

"What if I'm the one laughing and not in your direction? Unless you make a joke. I'll laugh, then." He smiled, hands on the table in front of him. "Hey, it looked to me like you arrived when I did, so, I'm gonna' say no?" he asked with a shrug.

"I had a day that backed into our -- into this so I had to shower quickly." He brought his hand to his hair. "Yep, my hair's still wet. What about you? Good day at your classified work?"

"Not sure how many jokes I'll be making. People have told me I'm more snarky than anything else," Daniel said with a nod. "And I'm glad I didn't keep you waiting. I have a problem with being on time some days."

When the waitress came over, Daniel ordered a beer since it was what he was in the mood for. He turned his attention back to Xander, and looked at his hair. "Still looks nice," he said. "It was boring with a lot of research type stuff. Only left my office to get junk for food lunch."

"Snarky is good. And punctuality is for ... people who want to be on time. You know, those people," he added. Xander ordered himself a Corona before regarding Daniel again. "Junk food is fantastic -- not so much for lunch."

"But junk food is good for lunch when one is hiding from someone," Daniel said with a laugh. The waitress brought their beers back and he thanked her before continuing. "I work with this woman, who drives me up the wall. She's the type of person that pushes herself onto everyone and she has this habit of just blurting out the truth, no matter how harsh it is. She asked me to lunch so I hid in my office. Yes, I'm a wimp and can happily admit it."

He took a drink of his beer and nodded at Xander. "Enough about my day. How was yours? Besides showing up for a date with wet hair?" he asked.

After taking a swig of his beer, he set it down. "Oh, we have one of those. One of those brutally honest people? Yeah, she doesn't make friends very easily. She came back from the dead --" He paused. "Figuratively. You know, she disappeared for a while and now she's back. She takes everything very literally. Very capitalist-type. No filter whatsoever." He followed this with another long sip trying to recover from his slip=up. "You don't seem like a wimp." On a less than wimpy whim, Xander lightly grabbed Daniel's shoulder and forearm and squeezed. "Yeah, I don't feel wimp, here."

My day. It was in a word, hell." Literally, he had to save a girl from going to hell. That had been fun. "This one girl wasn't listening to anyone, she was being very destructive. Things were broken but in the end she came down on the side of reason..." He pursed his lips. "You know, boring stuff."

Daniel didn't even blink his eyes when Xander made his slip-up. After all, he had come back from the dead and had spent time on a different plane with a group of Ancients. Which was something he would never tell Xander because he didn't want the other man to think he was some crazy person. "Hmm, wonder if I can make it so Vala gets lost?" he mused out loud. He then laughed when Xander squeezed his arm. "Hours and hours of playing basketball when there isn't anything else to do."

He sat back in his chair and listened to Xander. Taking a long drink of his beer, Daniel sat it down and softly laughed. "It sounded really boring," he said with a laugh. "Is this girl's last name Mitchell? She sounds a lot like my friend Cam - always doing stuff without listening to reason. You'd think spending majority of his time in medical would change his attitude, but it doesn't," he said before shaking his head. "Not that I'm any better with staying out of trouble."

"Yeah, see, I'm not so much with the sports." He smirked. "I swam in high school for about five minutes as a part of an investigation-...thing. But, that ended quickly." He looked at Daniel, then. "Steroids in the steam room. In the steam. Very...eventful things at my high school."

"No, no. Her first name was Mitchell - which is really random. And coincidental. Mitchell Ryan. 15 and coming into her own all of a sudden after a year of something she didn't understand. Some of them fall through the cracks and we only hear of them -- well, when one of my friends finds them."

Daniel chuckled and took a drink of his beer. "I hated sports when I was younger. My foster dad tried to get me into sports, but I was more into books," he explained. Daniel wasn't one to talk about his childhood, but he felt relaxed enough around Xander to do so. "Wasn't until I was older, and not so skinny that I started to like them. Just playing, though. Watching is a little boring."

He furrowed his brow as Xander talked about helping a teenage girl. Xander had said his work was classified but Daniel was starting to become a little curious. "Do you work with troubled teens, then?" He asked. "I know you said it was classified so you don't have to answer if you don't want to."

"I don't think watching is boring. Give me a game and some beer? It's not that bad." He chuckled, taking another swig from his bottle, his demeanor relaxing into the chair while also staying interested in Daniel and what he was saying.

"Some are troubled." That answer was truthful in it of itself. "A lot of the times, they can't handle circumstances around them. Circumstances they can't control. But we're there to prove that they can and that they can fight back." He looked up. "So to speak. They're not helpless pawns but they're not destructo-girls, either. They were put on the Earth for a purpose."

"Well, maybe you can teach me how to like watching sports," Daniel said. It was his attempt at flirting, and he hoped he hadn't crossed any lines by doing it. Daniel hadn't been out on a date in such a long time, and he was quite rusty.

With a look of interest, Daniel listened as Xander spoke. He knew all about people being placed places - Earth and otherwise - for a purpose. He was curious, of course, as to what these girls' purposes were. After a moment of thought, he decided to push the envelope a bit. "I know all about people having a purpose. I know of people whose DNA is different just so they can do things others can't," he said in reference to the Ancient gene.
