The sight of a Christmas tree in their bedroom delighted Toni to no end.
Being very keen on handmade gifts (and very aware that his lover could have anything that money could buy if he felt like it), Antonio had settled on making something cute for Lovi this year. Before he could even inspect the box under the tree, he rushed off to fish his gift from its hiding spot and thrust it into the Italian's lap.
Bouncing on the bed like a child, he reached for his own box with a declaration that they should both open them at the same time. Once he was obliged, he carefully started unpeeling his box, his tongue poking out of one side while he concentrated. Finally, when the box was opened, he took out the key, inspecting it carefully. Plain, silver, no engraving to hint at what it was meant to unlock. Questioningly, he looked to his lover for an answer. "What does this go to, Lovi?"
"It's a..." Lovino stared long and hard at the button artwork, turning it left and right and flipping it upside down. It's a...button tomato. There's nothing hidden. That's really it.
Well, it was certainly like Antonio to make something like that, and it was sort of cute. Lovino set down it on his lap, making a note to hang it up later after he'd dealt with a more pressing matter: one very excited, curious Spaniard. "It's a key to the front door."
Antonio stopped short, staring at the piece of metal in his hand in wonder. He knew how many locks there were to the front door. And he also knew just how long he had gone without even one, always waiting to be let in the house.
"Lovi...this is..."
There was still work to do, obviously. He only had one key so far. But to think that the Italian trusted him enough with this spoke volumes to him. Antonio caught his lover up in a hug, chest tight with feeling.
Lovino almost had his breath knocked out of him as the button tomato frame clattered to the floor. He really needed to start getting used to Antonio's impromptu and suffocating hugs. "Oi oi, relax would you? It's- It's just one, it's not getting you anywhere! Dammit. Don't feel so special about it."
It was probably a good thing that his head was over his partner's shoulder, so that the Spaniard couldn't see him burning up.
"But you trust me enough to give me a key. It means a lot to me, Lovi, that you can do that." Affection spilling from his every pore, he gave Lovino a little squeeze before leaning back and undoing the ever present chain from around his neck. The key was added, sliding down to sit against the crucifix as he hooked the ends back together.
"I'm going to do everything I can to keep that trust."
"Yeah well, just don't fuck it up." He only had to look at Antonio for a second to realise what he was doing. Which was fortunate, because Lovino wasn't sure he could handle that look for any longer than that.
The look of absolute adoration, affection, admiration and appreciation. It sickened him, and Lovi feared that if he met it for too long, his partner would take that as an invitation.
Instead, he focused his attention beyond the bed frame to where the cursed button tomato had fallen face down. "I'm gonna be in a hella trouble if anyone else gets their hands on that."
