Title: And One Day, You'll Know [1/?]
Pairing: Kyuhyun/Sungmin
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Sometimes, not everything goes the way you would like it to. Sometimes, you don't even know what you want.
I've had this story for a while, it's just that I've been wanting to write more chapters before posting it up on here. Also, I just sneezed.
It wasn’t love at first sight. There weren’t feelings of immediate breathlessness, and he didn’t feel weak at the knees. His heart didn’t feel as though it was going to burst from his chest, and when their hands first touched-a mere accidental brush-there was no shock of electricity that passed through each other’s skin. In fact, possibly the most interesting detail of their first encounter was that his voice cracked, just as he was saying, “Hello.”
This was mainly due to the fact that Kyuhyun was nervous about meeting the band, and when Sungmin first walked through the door, Kyuhyun was caught raiding the fridge. This was certainly not the first impression he wanted to make. He should have waited for the other members to get up, he thought later, and he should have waited until they had offered him something, but he was hungry, as he hadn’t had anything to eat since yesterday afternoon. He stood, frozen, with one hand holding a ball of lettuce (the lettuce had been in the way of his access to the milk), and the other on the refrigerator door awkwardly, hoping that Sungmin wouldn’t think badly of him already.
Sungmin didn’t particularly care.
“Hey,” was heard from him in a muffled sort of way, quickly followed by a short yawn. He shuffled his way closer to Kyuhyun, before lightly pushing him out of the way and grabbing the gallon of milk. Kyuhyun stood in the corner as Sungmin made himself cereal, and watched as he sat down and began to eat it.
A few seconds passed in silence before Kyuhyun assumed it would be fine if he were to get food as well. Nevertheless, he inched cautiously toward the still open refrigerator, just in case Sungmin were to spring up at any moment and refuse Kyuhyun the food which was kept inside. In a matter of seconds, he was able to safely procure himself a bowl of cereal, as well.
He placed the lettuce back in the fridge.
Taking a seat next to Sungmin, Kyuhyun couldn’t help but notice that he was eating his cereal sluggishly, slowly taking bite after bite. His eyes were focused to the distance, his hand moving as if automatically, back and forwards, back and forwards, each time the food managing to miraculously find its way to his mouth.
“Oh, Sungmin!” This time the food did not reach its destination, as a startled Sungmin suddenly jerked, the cereal deciding to take a slight detour, splattering itself on Kyuhyun’s unsuspecting face. With a wince, Leeteuk, who had also now joined them, continued his sentence. “I see you’ve met Kyuhyun, our new member.” Leeteuk, who Kyuhyun had met late last night when he first arrived, gave him a sympathetic smile.
“What--?” was heard from Sungmin, who then turned to face him. “Oh!” he exclaimed, upon noticing Kyuhyun with milk dripping down his chin. “Uhm,” a short pause. “Hi.” Sungmin continued to stare at the milk. “Did I-sorry about that.”
“No problem,” Kyuhyun said, as he wiped his face clean with the back of his palm. He offered him a small smile and Sungmin returned it with an unsure one of his own.
No, it wasn’t love at first sight.
Minutes later, Ryeowook joined the group of three, before noticing two of them with bowls of cereal in front of them. He fixed each person in the kitchen with a glare.
“You’ll be sleeping here.”
Kyuhyun looked towards the area that Donghae had indicated. The whole day had gone by, Kyuhyun trying to accustom himself to his twelve band mates, half of which he had to live with. It wasn’t easy getting used to a noisy dorm, where everyone knew each other so well while he hardly knew anyone at all. Throughout the day, groans of hunger and pleas for food could be heard, along with playful bantering and heated discussions. They watched movies, were in each other’s business, and nobody ever had a moment of silence when in the dorm. It was a life Kyuhyun would have to get used to, but perhaps it would be easier if he wouldn’t have to sleep on the floor.
“Uhm,” said Kyuhyun. He stared at the pile of blankets on the ground, none of which looked fluffy or comfortable. His body already ached at the thought of sleeping there.
“It’s really a lot better than it looks!” Donghae insisted. “The floor is actually kind of soft and squishy (something to do with the plumbing-we should look in to that) and I can get you more blankets if you want any-“
“We don’t have any more blankets,” said Sungmin, coming in through the door. He stood next to Kyuhyun and Donghae, contemplating what would be Kyuhyun’s bed. “I think Yesung has them all, doing I don’t know what…”
“It’s okay. I can sleep like this,” Kyuhyun smiled a bit awkwardly. He really didn’t want to cause the other members more trouble, when he felt like he had already intruded on them by joining the group when they had already debuted. It was a bit strange, and so he would keep to himself, and sleep through the night with an ache in his back, and probably wake up in the morning with his body sore all over. If it caused everyone less trouble, then he would go through with it, without any complaints.
Sungmin frowned. “No, it’s okay. You can sleep with me, at least for tonight, if you don’t mind.”
“He snores,” Donghae stated.
“Only a little.”
And so that night, Kyuhyun went to sleep listening to the soft snores coming from Sungmin beside him. He found himself thinking that he didn’t really mind, at all.
A few weeks afterwards, when Kyuhyun awoke, they were late. Shouts and yells of panic were heard throughout the dorm, as everyone moved about in a rush. They were frantic, today there being an important interview to attend to, and they could not afford to make a bad impression.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry-“
“Damn, Leeteuk, this isn’t your fault. Just get your shoes on, and let’s go.”
“It is though, it is. I have eight missed calls from Manager-hyung, and… Where’s Kyuhyun?”
A silence was made, as the members outside of his bedroom door took a moment to look around them. Kyuhyun’s heart thumped in fear. “Shit,” he cursed, as he tripped over the blankets while trying to get out of bed. The members would hate him for making them more late than they already were.
“I’ll go find him,” he could faintly hear Sungmin’s voice volunteer. Kyuhyun’s hands became clammy as he found a pair of jeans and hurried to put them on. Footsteps were heard coming closer to him, and then, the door opened.
It took about a second for Sungmin to take in the sight before him, give a small sigh, and then open a drawer in the wardrobe next to him. Looking through the shirts quickly, he found one to his liking and threw it to Kyuhyun.
“Hurry, put it on. Go brush your teeth while I find you some socks. We’ll do your hair and make-up in the car.”
Kyuhyun stood there numbly, before he collected himself and all but ran to the bathroom. His heart was still pounding, that was certain, but he felt just a little bit better to know that Sungmin would most likely support him throughout his stay in this group.
Before he opened the door to go join the rest of the members waiting in the van outside, he was hit in the head by an apple.
“Crap!” Kyuhyun looked to his left and found Sungmin standing there, looking a bit horrified. “I’m sorry! You were supposed to catch that!”
Kyuhyun bent down to pick up the apple, and while examining it, said, “How was I supposed to do that? I didn’t even notice you were still here, nonetheless an apple being hurled at me.” He gave a small smirk.
Sungmin hesitated, opening and closing his mouth a few times, before looking up at Kyuhyun. “Look, just eat it, okay? Since we don’t have time for breakfast, it’s the best you can do. You need your energy in the morning, especially after what’s happened so far.” He walked closer to Kyuhyun, pushing him outside and locking the door behind them. Standing outside of their dorms, Sungmin stopped for a minute. “And about not waking you up-I’m sorry about that, too.”
When Kyuhyun looked at Sungmin, he noticed that his cheeks were a light red, and he refused to make eye contact. He wanted to say something along the lines of thank you or it wasn’t your fault, hyung, or even please, don’t apologize. You have no idea how much you’ve done for me, already, but when he opened his mouth to say these things, all that would come out was a slight cough. It was too late to say anything now, either way, as they had already approached the van.
Kyuhyun tried not to notice how as soon as they opened the door, the van got completely silent, and nobody even looked at him. He tried to ignore the hurt that he felt when nobody would speak to him throughout the ride, and he found, when Sungmin clutched his hand tightly, that it was easier to get past it when Sungmin was there by his side.
He brought the slightly bruised apple to his mouth and took a bite out of it, unable to help the grin that came to his lips afterwards.
When Kyuhyun realized that he was already in love with Sungmin, he was playing StarCraft. The shock of it made him paralyzed for a few seconds, enough time for his opponents to defeat him in the game.
“Shit,” said Kyuhyun, both because of his loss in the game, and because of this new information he had come across. He pressed reset.
Sungmin chose that moment to come in through the door of their now shared bedroom, and collapsed on his bed.
“I’m so tired,” Sungmin moaned, and rolled over.
Kyuhyun smiled.
