[Jolhur] Wolf Story

Oct 23, 2012 12:31

There are stories.

The wolves know them, even if Jol’s forgotten and there’s no one left in Jintha’alor to speak the words. Once, long ago…

But not once, and not so very long. A hundred, thousand times over has the story been repeated, and it has gained truth in each telling. It goes like this:

The moon hung full and bright over the trees, just out of reach of the branches, when the wolves stepped out of the woods. Walking on two feet, just as trolls do, but with more toes. They walked as men and women, not as beasts, and their shadows in the moonlight showed their true shapes.

They came up to the village, to the city, to the houses, and they mingled.

Some returned, hiding away before the first fingers of harsh morning light could reach down through the pines for them. Some stayed, and changed.

After a time, there were children, some on four legs and some on two.

This is why, though the Vilebranch revere the spider (as they should) it is the wolves who are family, brother and sister to them. And some nights, they say, when the moon is high, two-legged shadows walk the woods.

Or so the story goes.
