I think even my mother might have shifted by now (she would be 103 if she were still alive); she was constantly impressing me by how open-minded she was, and how even when her instinctive reaction to something was very negative, she was willing to think about it. For instance, she had a strongly negative gut reaction to counter-tenors, because she associated them with castrati and that made her very uncomfortable. But she knew I loved to listen to Alfred Deller and she certainly didn't try to dissuade me. And she had a very strong opposition to divorce, and there had only been one instance in all of her extended family, but she surprised me by being completely ready for my first divorce -- in fact it turned out she had been worrying about me and was ready for it before I was. And she also surprised me when I told her Emmon and I were going to get married, and she asked me whether we had considered living together for a while first. (I thought she didn't approve of that, so I hadn't told her we already were.)
This is probably similar to what we read now about how undogmatic a lot of the moderate Republicans are turning out to be. Why the religious right exerted such a strong influence for so long is then slightly a puzzle, but it may be similar to how the fear of seeming unpatriotic silenced the congressional Democrats for so long and let Bush do so much damage.
Anyway, yes, I think there are grounds for a lot of hope for all those who believe that there should be no legal obstacles to same-sex marriage.
