AU history: Milo remained in Atlantis for a few months after the first expedition, translating and re-teaching the Atlantean language to the people. It wasn't long, however, before the black mist appeared; he soon received a letter from the Academy and left Atlantis to teach there.

Personality:

Milo is not a traditional hero by any means. He's weedy, awkward, and not very physically impressive. However, this doesn't mean that he doesn't have enough guts to make up for it. In the end, he is truly a good person with a caring heart. He's honest and well-meaning as well as an idealist; as someone who has studied different civilizations and eras of peoples, he appreciates people from all cultures and backgrounds, treating them as equals no matter what. Knowledge from the past is of great value to him, too.
A big part of who he is is his intelligence--he's a cunning skilled linguist and cartographer, not to mention he's got a bit of experience working with and repairing some machines. He can speak and read several dead languages. New discoveries fascinate him; if you happen to be nearby when he figures something out, it's likely you'll get an earful from him. (Not much of it will make sense.) However, he's mostly JUST book smart. Milo is clumsy and tends to get himself into trouble. A lot. He isn't very good with many practical things, including driving and fighting, and mostly just gets by with luck. His intelligence can sometimes come in handy, though: in a pinch he can use his wits to find a solution.
Milo is also very idealistic. If something's wrong to him, it's wrong; he won't compromise his beliefs for anyone. Even if he's knocked down physically, he won't back down in spirit. He'll stubbornly hang onto what he believes is right, no matter what anyone else thinks.

Appearance:
Time in Atlantis really hasn't changed his physique much at all. Milo is a pretty thin, wimpy-looking guy with big round glasses and a high forehead. He tends to wear very stuffy, professional-looking clothes, but he also never fails to wear his Atlantean pendant, which is pale blue and glows on its own.

Greatest Fear:
Milo fears failure. He's been striving to prove himself and his theories for years, only to be shot down time and time again. To Milo, continuing to be seen as a mockery would be failing both himself and his grandfather. Neither of these, especially not the latter, are an option for him.

Classes:
English Literature, Latin, and Ancient History

Clubs:

Time at the Academy: New teacher; this is his first year at the academy.

❦ Writing

Third person writing sample:

Milo Thatch had three big problems right now.

First of all, today was his first day on the job, and that was always a problem, especially since no one had come to fetch him or even offer to help him in any way once he’d arrived. There was a map, yes, but he hadn’t been given any information about where he’d be staying at all. And that was an issue when he had been traveling for a few weeks from an underground city back to the surface. Tired was a gross understatement-he was exhausted, both physically and mentally. He would have given his left foot for one of Sweet’s neck crackings right at that moment.

Second, he had no idea where his things were. He could only assume that Whitmore had had them sent to the Academy for him, but who knew? The only letter he’d gotten was the “hello there, good sir Hero of Atlantis, please come mold young minds so they can help fight this mysterious, dark, and possibly evil force” one; there was nothing about his books or his research or anything. Not even his cat. (And he had honestly missed the darn thing, too!) How was he going to teach anything without any lesson plans, without any material to draw from? The few things he’d brought from Atlantis would never be enough for a whole year’s curriculum.

And as for the third thing?

…He…really wasn’t sure where he was going to park his giant flying stone fish vehicle.

Where was his new boss? Heck, where was Kida? He’d had Atlantis for a while, yes, but it wasn’t enough without her there. He’d been missing her greatly. Milo sighed deeply and removed his glasses, rubbing a speck of dirt off with the corner of his shirt. That was another thing he needed-clothes. The Atlantean ones were nice, but the only surface outfit he owned was the same ragged top and pair of pants he’d worn to get to Atlantis…

Well, that wasn’t the issue now. Right now he needed to find Mickey. He scanned the campus grounds and, peering down at the map he had been sent, began the trudge over to the Headmaster’s office.

First person writing sample:
Uh, hello? Is this thing on? Hel--ow, ow, ow, feedback. Okay, that definitely...works, then...

Well, hello, everybody, I'm Milo Thatch, and I'm going to be your English, History, and Latin teacher. You can call me Mr. Thatch. Or, uh, Professor Thatch. Actually, Milo would probably okay too, but... anyways. I'm really looking forward to meeting you all in class, and I'm sure we'll all have a great year together!

And, uh, to the other teachers? If I could talk to you all later about this whole black mist business... I've been doing some digging on the subject, but I haven't been able to find anything more than rumors. I want to know as many facts about it as possible, and I'd really appreciate if you could fill me in. Thanks.
