SPN Fanfiction Rec List

Jun 08, 2011 20:21

My life has been nothing but insane these past weeks, and there's no end in sight. Luckily, I've been able to distract myself with some quality SPN fic. My memories are already swarming with it, so I decided to make a rec post.

A Blog He Wrote by mimblexwimble (Lucifer, Sam, Dean, various others; 5 parts + a tag; PG-13)
Author's summary: Sam loses his laptop and Lucifer starts a blog. What else is an evil overlord supposed to do in his free time?
Rec: One of the first SPN fics I read some 3 years ago, and it's still hilarious.

A Change in the Season by heathyr_iltp(Dean, Castiel; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: A wind has blown the rain away and blown the sky away and all the leaves away, and the trees stand. I think, I too, have known autumn too long. -E.E. Cummings.
Rec: A short and very poetic ficlet featuring a fallen Cas coping with his new humanity. Spoilers up to 6x20.

a week from next tuesday by maerhys (Sam, the Trickster; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: Sam can't face a future where he never gets to see his brother alive again.
Rec: A pretty grim Mystery Spot ficlet. Really stunning execution.

And the Angel Said: "Fuck it." And All the Bullshit of Heaven Could Not Convince him Otherwise by proxydialogue (Castiel-centric; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: A more detailed account of how (and why) Heaven failed to rehabilitate Cas. Hint: it was Dean's fault.
Rec: Oh, really, just read it. Especially the opening scene. And the ending. And what's in the middle. XD

Blind Men and Elephants by lielabell (Castiel/Dean; one-shot; R)
Author's summary: “Stop taking your frustrations out on me,” Sam snaps a good five days and nine hundred miles later. “It’s not my fault Cas doesn’t think the sun shines out of your ass anymore.”
Rec: Insanely funny and features a great portrayal of Sam.

Clean Slate by debbiel66 (John, Bobby, Dean, Sam; series; R)
Author's summary: After his own unlikely resurrection, John Winchester is bound and determined to find his boys. But he soon finds that death isn’t the clean slate it pretends to be…
Rec: Season 6 the way it would be if John came back from the dead. Deviates from canon after 6x16. So far has two sequels, Killing Time and Back Seat Driver, the links are in the post.

Come On In My Kitchen by neros_violin (Sam, Dean; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: Sam, Dean, and Jim Beam have a conversation.
Rec: The aftermath of 6x16. Helps cope with that depressing episode.

Five Times Castiel Gave Up (And One Time He Didn't by triedunture (Dean/Castiel pre-slash; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: none.
Rec: A great look at Cas in season 5.

Four Gifts Hell Gave Dean by sistabro (Dean, Sam; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: Hell misses Dean. It sends him love letters. They aren't immediately recognizable as love letters.
Rec: It has a hellhound. That's all you need to know. XD B/c I could write love letters to this story and still not get it right. Simply stunning.

Far From His Home by be_themoon (Castiel-centric; one-shot; T)
Author's summary: Castiel, over time. "I am not, as you say, a hammer."
Rec: An interesting look at Cas throughout his life. Archived at AO3.

girl on fire by dayadhvam_triad (Mary, Michael; one-shot; unrated)
Author's summary: Post-5x13, Michael is slow to leave John, wants to play house. Mary catches on in fits and bursts. Think ala Kara and Leoben in BSG.
Rec: A really chilling story that makes use of a pretty unlikely pairing.

held against your bones by dayadhvam_triad (Dean/Castiel subtext; 3 parts; R)
Author's summary: After Stull Cemetery, Dean finds himself with an angel in his head for unsolicited company. It’s a time to tie up loose ends and run into acquaintances old and new, but Dean isn’t finished with Hell just yet, and Castiel’s trapped without a body of his own. (And someone’s got a wild card left to play.)
Rec: A beautiful journey post-Season 5 that takes both Dean and Cas to all sorts of amazing places.

Hell or High Water by ink_electric (Dean/Castiel; 5 parts; R)
Author's summary: Wherein Dean and Sam are killed by forces unknown (again), and Castiel is willing to do just about anything do bring them back. However, things aren’t quite as straightforward as they seem, and the civil war in Heaven reaches an unexpected climax when Raphael shows his hand. A story about faith, morality, and the ultimate cost of free will.
Rec: An epic story of Castiel's awesomeness. Spoilers up to 6x16. I really couldn't put it down.

His Favourite Color by catsintheattic (John, Dean, OFC; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: When Mary died, Dean didn’t stop drawing pictures, and John was still more father than drill sergeant.
Rec: A touching fic that provides an insight into the Winchesters' life shortly after Mary's death.

Holding Hands with a God by
scaramouche (Dean/Castiel; one-shot; NC-17)
Author's summary: Dean is a superhero. Castiel is a mild-mannered reporter trying to get an interview.
Rec: I don't usually enjoy AUs, but this is a pretty interesting take on the characters in a different settings. And it's hot.

Holes by kalliel (Dean, Sam; one-shot; R)
Author's summary: The Winchesters dig a hole.
Rec: Probably the weirdest fic I've ever read, but that's what it's all about. The style of this story brings a whole new meaning to different POVs. Coda to 6x22.

Homing Pigeons by glassyskies (Dean/Castiel; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: The story of How Dean Saves Castiel (or How Castiel Saves Dean), through the eyes of Sam Winchester (and How Sam Maybe Saves Them Both).
Rec: The style of this story is breathtaking. It is poignant, heartwrenching and creates a very believable aftermath of the Season 6 finale. And once again, a wonderful portrayal of Sam. Contains spoilers for 6x22.

How Becky Totally Saved the World Without Becoming a Mary Sue or: PLEASE R&R OR I'LL NEVER WRITE ANOTHER CHAPTER by girl_wonder (Becky Rosen/Chuck Shurley; one-shot; G)
Author's summary: The upside of living with a prophet was the fanfic. And the forewarning of the apocalypse. But, mostly the fic.
Rec: Because that's ttly how it happened for real. ;)

how to move a mountain impasse by spylace (Dean, Castiel; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: Ask and you shall receive; Dean’s soul is worth two hamburgers, a bottle of beer, and a heart-to-heart. AU to 6x20
Rec: Quite an original take on what could have happened if Cas had popped in for a visit after all.

Human Kindness by chiiyo86 (Sam, Dean, OCs; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: Who are those strangers who moved in across the street?
Rec: A very cute gen story in which the Winchesters are viewed through an outsider's POV. The OCs are very realistic and sympathetic.

I Guess You Are A Match For My Crane Style by amor_remanet (Jesse Turner, Crowley; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: Secondly, and more importantly than all of that, AJ Fell wears suits. With ties. To school.
Rec: This is one of those fics. Yeah, those that take minor characters you barely even remember and stick'em into a WHOAAAAA!!!-kind of a text and then make you want to re-read them a thousand times over. This one's witty, clever and unexpected.

Interim by twoskeletons (Castiel-centric; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: none.
Rec: Another poignant Cas at war fic. Very much in spirit of 6x20.

It Usually Washes Off by fossarin (Castiel/Meg; one-shot; NC-17)
Author's summary: Meg would never sleep with the enemy, unless it happens to be Castiel.
Rec: Hot and IC, a perfect depiction of this twisted pairing. Spoilers up to 6x19.

Jimmy’s Daughter Will Not Look Down by lili22 (Claire-centric; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: Claire Novak has never asked anything of the angel walking around in her father’s body. Not for ten whole years.
Rec: A stunning vision of Claire's future.

Kryptonite by highermagic (Castiel-centric, Dean/Castiel pre-slash; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: If I go crazy then will you still call me Superman?
Rec: It's a songfic. Before you go running for the hills, let me just say that it's one of those rare occasions when a fic makes a good use of a song and they really complete each other. This contains vague spoilers for 6x20 and presents Cas's mindframe during that horrible time for him.

Letters of Resignation by monicawoe (Henchdemons; one-shot; unrated)
Author's summary: Henchdemon POV: Dear Lucifer, please don't let your stupid Vessel FREAKING EAT ME!
Rec: Hilarious letters by poor underappreciated random SPN demons.

Lie back and lie to my face by _bluebells (Lucifer/Michael; one-shot; NC-17)
Author's summary: His entire body is thrumming with heat and a toneless song that he can only qualify as joy and it’s the closest to Heaven he’s felt since he became human.
Rec: All-human AU, PWP, great portrayal of the now human angels.

Named by mclachlan (SPN; Dean/Castiel; R; multi-chapter)
Author's summary: Jesus Christ is dead. Somehow, that isn't the worst part of Dean's week.
Rec: Possibly one of the best SPN fics I've ever read. It's insanely long and deviates from canon after 4x22. It presents the slash between Dean and Castiel as realistically as possible. A special bonus: awesome portrayal of Gabriel.

Of Course I Know by fantapieland (Dean/Castiel, Sam; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: A humorous one-shot. Castiel did something unexpected in an old music shop.
Rec: Very short, but really awesome. The punch line had me grinning for ages.

On the Body by Saucery (Dean/Castiel; one-shot; T)
Author's summary: Approximately 1000 words of Castiel being Castiel. Which, of course, means obsessing over Dean. And free will. And God. And the pizza man.
Rec: Castiel's POV handled with breathtaking finesse. Archived at AO3.

One Thousand, One Hundred Thirty-Nine Miles by
theskywasblue (Castiel-centric; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: none.
Rec: An interesting take on what might happen to all angels. Spoilers up to 6x18.

Plainclothes Men by fossarin and nanoochka (Dean/Castiel, Bobby; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: Those in the background have their secrets, too.
Rec: Awesome interaction between Cas and Bobby. And a rather unexpected ending.

Project iPod - Meg by ensign_amy (Castiel/Meg; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: Dean isn't the only person who wants to educate Cas on music.
Rec: A great development of Cas and Meg's relationship complete with a cool choice of songs.

Purpose and Second Wind by unikorento (John, Crowley; one-shots; PG/G)
Author's summary: Sneaking out while the gate is open doesn't make you someone else's dog.
Rec: These two fics are set after Season 2 finale and deal with John's resurrection, but in a pretty unexpected way.

Sanguine by monicawoe (Sam, Lucifer, Michael; one-shot; R)
Author's summary: none.
Rec: Really dark and chilling and beautiful in its scariness.

searching for its trace in the sky by losttheirbones (Claire-as-Castiel, Sam, Dean, Amelia; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: AU; this is her home now; claire, a safe harbor; also dean is a rabbit.
Rec: Very poetic, beautifully written, a real work of art; and Dean and Sam are rabbits. Yes, rabbits.

Summer Camp by gigglingkat (John, Wee!chesters, OCs; one-shot; G)
Author's summary: "I sent his brother to summer camp," he explained. "You heartless bastard," laughed the manager. "That seems to be the general consensus," John agreed.
Rec: Dean goes to summer camp and wreaks havoc on it. Sam, meanwhile, wreaks havoc on John's life. Masterfully. ;)

These endless days are finally ending in a blaze by dontbitethesun (Dean/Cas, Sam; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: Sam is a massive Buffy fanboy, but not even he could anticipate how closely his and Dean's lives have been paralleling the show lately.
Rec: Joss Whedon is a god. Didn't you know?

Thirteen Ways of Looking at an Angel by 22by7 (SPN; Castiel; unrated; poem)
Author's summary: none.
Rec: A remake of Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird by Wallace Stevens, SPN-style. 'Nuff said.

to a new world of gods and monsters by joyyjpg (Crowley, Castiel; one-shot; PG-13)
Author's summary: Things are different now but still so the same: God is good, the Devil is bad, but there are so many things they don't teach in Sunday school.
Rec: It's amazing how this foretells the events of the finale. Poetic and depressing and simply beautiful.

us with our pilgrim hearts by be_themoon (Claire Novak/Jesse Turner/Ben Braeden; one-shot; T)
Author's summary: Team Free Will 2.0 - Claire Novak & Ben Braeden as hunters, with the occasional assistance of long-suffering demigod/Antichrist Jesse Turner.
Rec: I don't really know how to describe this fic. I'm not much of a fan of the next generation fics, but this one just creates such a believable image. And it makes the characters so well fleshed-out as if we already have tons of canon material to base their relationship on. Archived at AO3.

yes is yes is yes by gabby_silang (Claire, Castiel; one-shot; PG)
Author's summary: She is a small human being up in a tree.
Rec: This is so sweet and creepy at the same time that I can't even say anything else. XD

slash, gen, het, fic rec, spn, pre-slash
