This not only explains why the Basilisk was so ready to kill Harry, it also foreshadows Voldemort's relationship with Nagini.

Thank you so much! I don't know why I like this pairing so much (I mean Tom/Abraxas, not Tom/Basilisk, ha-ha-ha!!!) Guess I just like to think Tom had at least one friend who was closer to him than the others. The story It Runs In The Blood (it's here as well) explains my point.
As for the Basilisk... poor creature, locked in that horrible Chamber. I just felt sorry for it.
