Ah, I am loving this.

Cutler peeked in with a jovial, “What’s up, Rookie?”

heh, good nickname.
I am enjoying Cutler's interest/jealousy so much.

Cutler laughed. Rook stared at him. Cutler whispered conspiratorially, "How about I bribe you to replace Fergus' weekly report with a report on agriculture, Mr Home Secretary?"
Rook said, “Hmm. Let me think about it.”
Cutler watched him expectantly.
“No.”

Love this. And also love that you're throwing in little similarities between Rook's speech the way Hal speaks on the show ("au fait" for instance, and then Rook's dialogue in this bit reminds me of Hal in his confrontation with Tom and Adam in 4x05). Not sure if it's intentional, but I'm enjoying it and it works.

Loved the conversation regarding Ivan, Mitchell, Herrick, and Herrick's whole line being rotten, and the DoDD's involvement with Kemp's work.

One little thing I caught in the dinner scene: The conversation remained civil and fluctuated between matters of politics (though nothing of the human resistance) and Jacob's ( ... )

Awww, thank you for commenting <333

We managed to post it on the DW anniversary, of all days, go us XD

Rook and Cutler are fun to write too ;)

thanks for catching the repeated line, the edits drove us a bit crazy.

"au fait" was ttly intentionally bc yay twisted parallels and now I'll have to rewatch Hal's confrontation with Tom and Adam bc that similarity seems to have happened on its own.

Rook's archive materials were ttly an excuse to slip some S1-3 stuff in.

This fic is just full of great conversation.

happy to hear this)))

ha, well, as someone who only sporadically cares about DW these days, I appreciated having something NOT DW-related pop up this weekend!

I knew "au fait" had to be intentional, because really, who uses that otherwise? ;) The other bit isn't super close to the exchange in 4x05, but it's the same "Hm, let me think about it. I've thought about it. No." kind of thing. Reading it, I picture Rook's delivery here as being a bit different than Hal's in that scene, though. Without the "au fait" bit before it, I'm not sure I would have picked up on the similarity.

Ah, okay, it was: “Hmm. Let me think about it.”... “No.”?

I'm having a nightmare week, and your comment really made me forget about that for a while. :))) Thank you so much! Both Shiro and I are very happy you like this story. <333
This story is so different to what I expected. Now I'm curious: what did you expect? ;)
Hal just understands that Rook would run for the hills if he saw the lol Jekyll/Hyde thingie so he has to be careful. XDDD
This post-apocalyptic world has made everyone so delightfully horny. Unless Cutler was joking. XD He was quite drunk after all. ;)
I thought you didn't want to acknowledge that Hatch happened? Yes, but we sort of get a kick out of making Hal look like a fool in all this devil-related situation. XD We're ignoring pretty much everything that s5 brought up (I can tell you right now, the names of Lady Mary or Sylvie won't be mentioned ever, Natasha has already appeared as nameless mention in ch 1, certain revelations re: Rook's father will also be delicately overlooked), but personally I can't stop snickering at that failure of a ritual in 5x01 so we sort of go ( ... )

Uwah, your comment kinda floored me, in a good way. It also gave me extra momentum for Ch 3 edits (see Erin's post on writing XD)

Well, I've finally, finally got the time to catch up with my reading. The downside: knowing that you'd posted, and not having time to look at it. The upside: two chapters to read in one go! Woo hoo! \o/

So much good stuff in this chapter. I'm really enjoying your exploration - and evolution - of what's going on inside Rook's head. <3 I love the way he always wants to understand, to have an answer and an explanation and a reason: I do not dare ask for forgiveness but of course I yearn for absolution anyway. I need my life under control. But even more I need to know that if I lose control, I won’t lose myself. And the ambiguity is great: is he doing the "right" thing, and can he trust his own motivations any more ( ... )

Getting comments from you always makes my day 500 % better. ;))) (And don't worry, our entire readership of, like, 4,5 people is imagining a threesome. XDDD Sometimes I think people ship Rook/Cutler more than Hal/Rook here XD Can't blame them; I myself still have ISSUES with Hal.))
he is always the expert on Hal Yorke and how he will fuck you and fuck you up. If he'd been one of those fictional vampires who always go to school/college and have a 1000 diplomas, he could have written a thesis on Hal. XDDDD
But really, Cutler is the main source of joy for me in this story. When the rest is bleak and scary, we can all count on Cutler to bring in the funny. XD Not that Rook's gay panic and crises of conscience aren't funny. XDD
Thank you so much for reading! <333 I hope you enjoy the next chapter too. :))
