10 Annoying Things: Storylines, Devices, Details, etc. Part 1

Ever found a story, be it a book, a movie or a TV-series, that was good in just about every way except that one element that just happened to be one of your berserk buttons? Or perhaps that element doesn't cause enough rage to stop you from watching but you still grit your teeth every time it's in the forefront. Perfect stories are so few and far ( Read more... )

I'll put this one alongside"a woman's life is meaningless until she becomes a mother and popping a baby out of her vag is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING A WOMAN WILL EVER DO". This just sounds so barbaric in the modern world, but for all that TV-shows try to come up with more imaginative characters, it often still boils down to the pursuit of relationship. That's depressing. T_T I do enjoy love stories, don't get me wrong, and I enjoy shipping, but it has to be plausible! Relationship takes time IRL, so why can't it take time in a story? The latest example from Once Upon a Time for instance: they have recently introduced Ariel (the Little Mermaid) but instead of getting at least a couple of days with her prince as she did in the Disney movie, she basically only spoke to him once during a ball, after that he offered her to go traveling with him and she agreed, but circumstances separated them before she could even tell him she was a mermaid. Then a couple of episodes later they meet again (in-verse, it's like 28 years later!) and the first thing they do it of course kiss like it's some epic true love. Because god forbid anyone on this show doesn't have true love! (Don't even get me started on a vaguely implied semi-tragic femslash pairing.)
When it comes to Joss, I'm not really mad at him for killing Tara (I love her and it's tragic but that's what I love about Joss: he's not afraid of killing off his characters). And he did say that if Willow had still been with Oz, he would have killed Oz, so the death is Willow-focused. I actually love Tara's death b/c it's so shockingly realistic, a bullet amidst all the usual magic chaos. Imho it's a genius idea, on par with Joyce unexpectedly dying after she'd just got better. Storywise, it's rather brilliant. BUT - Kennedy? The quick fix-it? Seriously, Joss? WHY!? At least he didn't have Willow forget Tara completely. I don't know, maybe it's even realistic. Maybe Kennedy was like a crutch Willow needed at that moment (they did break up in the comics, from what I understand...). But heh, it doesn't mean I like the way their relationship played out. It was rushed and felt more like a hole to fill than an actual love story.
