I don't really like those Top [insert a number] Lists of Best Moments (of anything) because for some reason my ideas of those "best moments" are always different from those lists. F.ex. there was a list of Top 12 best moments in BH and while I agreed with most of the list, I couldn't understand how they could put Tom setting up Hal's date with Alex in 4x06 on the list but completely ignore all of 4x07.
I haven't made a secret out of practically hating series 5. It's very hard for me to like it overall but there have been moments (sometimes irrelevant to the overall story) that have made it okay. So here's the list of those moments.
Warning: heavily (and I do mean heavily) biased in favour of Rook and Alex. ;) Also, there is no specific order here, except for the order, in which the episodes were released.
5x01, The Trinity
1. Hal and Rook meet at the Barry Grand.
(c) isleepnowI still parallels between them and I could probably dig up some symbolism and write some meta, but who'd read it? XD Suffice it to say that I find hugely ironic that Rook comes off as sort of a temptor here, offering Hal free blood and security, and in 5x06 he gets possessed by the greatest temptor of them all, a.k.a. the Devil. XD Damien Molony and Steven Robertson are both glorious actors and this is arguably the last time we see Rook in any position of control on this show. Plus, sex eyes. Sexy sex eyes. Shut up, I told you I was biased. ;)))
2. Alex yelling at Hal at the Barry Grand.
(c) itwassoufflegirl--againI adore this moment because this is how a woman who is forced to live with a man who played a part in her death, however unintentionally, should act like! Not making googly eyes at him. I love it that Alex is no-nonsense, speaks her mind and won't take shit from anyone.
3. Alex's breakdown.
(c) jeromeclarkerHands down the most heartbreaking scene in the entire series 5. She is very strong and she adapted to being dead much faster than Annie did, at least on the outside. So it's extremely powerful to see breaking down like this, and that's some gorgeous acting from Kate Bracken.
5x02, Sticks and Rope
4. Alex saying goodbye to her family.
(c) popcornandrosesEmotional, beautiful filmed and gives a sad, but much needed sense of closure (which is why the finale is double-dumb for sort of negating this.)
5x03, Pie and Prejudice
5. Rook's suicide attempt.
(c) halyorkeshireLiterally the only thing that helped me survive this episode. Amazing acting, gorgeous colouring and cinematography and lots of seriously wasted potential here. Rook seems to be the main victim of the wasted potential in s5 because most of the time the writing he's in is truly atrocious.
5x04, The Greater Good
6. Tom giving Bobby the answering machine.
(c) halyorkeshireI quite liked Bobby. He was sweet and cute and didn't deserve to be used as just another plot device. This scene honestly made me tear up a little. Gotta love Tom too: he barely knows Bobby and he finds him annoying at first but he gives him a chance and becomes genuinely involved in his well-being and makes a single most meaningful present he could have made. Beautiful. T_T
7. Crumb's death.
(c) halyorkeshireNo, this is not on the list because I spent 4 weeks hating Crumb's guts and wanting him to die. XD It's here because, while the scene was full of logic!fail (like, can't they smell werewolf blood?), I find ot surprisingly undramatic compared to Fugly's usual behaviour and thus touching. Crumb is another example of wasted potential: a better actor and more logic behind the character and his role in the story (which ultimately seemed to boil down to opening Hal's and Alex's eyes to their mutual attraction; srsly LOLWUT?) would have made all the difference.
5x05, No Care, All responsibility
8. Alex and Hal question Rook about the Barry Grand suicides
(c) abbehtronFor no other reason than major LOL. Everyone's faces here!
9. Alex and Hal talk after she sees him with Natasha.
(c) halyorkeshireIntense, emotional scene. Alex has a great insight into Hal and she tells him the things he might not want to hear but needs to hear. And once again, gorgeous cinematography.
5x06, The Last Broadcast
10. Alex breaking up Hal and Tom's fight.
(c) supernatashaBecause badass, albeit slightly cheesy. XD But the girl's just crawled out of her own grave (albeit with logic!fail again). She can afford some showing off. XD
11. Rook shooting Hatch.
(c) itwassoufflegirl--againThis was the single best scene in the entire (dreadfully executed) episode. Even though I believe this was already part of a dream, it was still glorious. And by it, I mean the look on Rook's face.
Honourable mention: Alex trolling Rook at Crumb's crime scene (5x01), the trio scared to face Oliver (5x02), Lady Mary threatening to cut off Larry's balls (5x03), Alex asking Tom to come home (5x03), the final montage of 5x05 to Hey, Man, Nice Shot (5x05), the trio confronting Rook in the street (5x06).
Favourite webisodes:
Revenge on Rook (because it was hilarious and silly and the best revenge ever);
Taking Care (because tear-jerking and potentially helps - or could help - Rook to realize that not all supernaturals are savage beasts).
