chasing fireflies

the night i fell in love with you,
you were chasing fireflies.

your bare feet, soundless in the grass,
led you back and forth
between the flashing tail lights
as you tried to capture them,
one by one, with just your hands
and laughter.

i watched you from a few feet away
and giggled at your delight
when you came so close to catching one,
and i adored the look on your face
when you finally did, and you carefully
parted your hands to look at it with
such interest, intrigued by the intricacies
of it's mating ritual...

then you gently tossed it back into
the breeze that it came from and stood
staring in awe as it flew soundlessly away.

you came back to sit with me and watch
the other fireflies blink on and off like
stars that are too close to the earth,
and you held my hand and i kissed your head.

that's the night i fell in love with you.
