No no no no no. This is another red herring. Can we live in the present please? If you have a 2000 or 2004 presidential election bumper sticker on your car, do us all a favor and go scrape it off. Any residual smugness or bitterness you feel is completely beside the point. We have enough problems right now, no matter whom you voted for in either election.
Consider this: Al Gore spent 8 years as a Congressman and 8 years as a Senator for Tennesee, yet its 11 electoral votes went to Bush in 2000. If Gore had been able to deliver his home state, even with Florida going to Bush, the electoral vote count would have been 277 Gore, 260 Bush, with 270 needed to win. Florida would not have mattered.
George Bush may not have won the 2000 election, but Al Gore definitely lost it.
