I had my first brush with bartending this weekend. Bryan's cafe provided beer and wine for a fashion event at the Artisan building on Del Paso Boulevard. Turnout was pretty bitchin! We were set up in the gallery, which had a really interesting collection of fashion-related art. We were sandwiched between awesomely creepy ceramic armless figures (with actual cloth pant/skirt things) and a large mixed media... thing (?) of a dress form. There were also wee dresses made out of paper towels, and dresses made from vintage comics. A very neat exhibit, but not the focus of the evening. (OH! Also felted wool [I assume] figures of women- also really neat.)
There were DJs aplenty, a trunk show in the space next door, and a fashion show featuring live music in the back (which I believe is normally a church).
We didn't anticipate how much beer we'd need. We started out with 2 cases of Sierra Nevada, a case of Newcastle and 2 18-packs of Pabst Blue Ribbon. We sold out of Pabst ridiculously fast, and Bryan made multiple trips to the liquor store across the street to pick up another beer we could sell for $2. Miller High Life! The Champagne of Beers!
The night went really well, and they're planning on doing it again, which is awesome. Hopefully, they'll call on us to provide refreshments again. I had a good time, even though my dress looked pretty stupid, and I hadn't showered. (Gross.) I think I'd have liked to check out the Trunk Show, but I get nervous and weird around fashion-y, cool-type people, and probably wouldn't have bought anything anyway.
I did get some free faux-Wayfarers, though! Perfect timing, as I broke my favorite green sunglasses earlier in the day. :( I realize white Wayfarers can be construed as kind of douchey, but I'm deciding not to give a shit.
Oooh, I bought some adorable china flats from UO last week, and a fabulous yellow sundress from Fred Flare. I'm ready for summer. I think I might even look for a big sunhat this year.
I've got a massive wishlist at Fred Flare, and I've been doing my damnedest to try and find those things cheaper elsewhere. I thought I had bitchin' Google-mojo, but alas! No such luck. Mostly, I'm dying to find the Forget-Me-Not ring, and the little gold pretzle necklace by Lucid Studios- too cute! I had a white pair of faux-Wayfarers on there too, but thanks to a Bows & Arrows promo, those are taken care of.
I feel bad for spending so much money lately, what with having tho shell out a nice sum for my root canal (which was a breeze, and even got me a few Vicodin- certainly helping work go by happily). But I still have my tax return coming, and Bryan owes me for his netbook, so I really have quite a bit mroe money than I realize. Not to mention my hoarding-stash.
I reckon I'll call my tattoo artist today. I think I've said that every day for the past week. Hee. I'm getting tired of people asking me when/if I'm going to get it finished, and not having an answer. It's about time, yanno? And I'm excited to see what it will look like with color.
I bought tickets last night for us to go see Avenue Q with Bryan's aunt and brother. I'm pretty juiced- it seems right up my alley. Puppets and adult humor? YES PLS.
I ditched class yesterday. The time change was really tough on me! Probably worse this morning. My alarm went off, and it was dark. Not a huge fan of that. I did kind of like it still being light at 7, though. That's nice.
I've been trying to collect fashion inspiration photos on the internet. I should really save them before the links get all wonked. I'm tryingtryingtrying to look put-together, and still look like myself. I'm notoriously slackery, but I'm working on building a wardrobe that's easy to wear and looks pretty awesome to boot.
On my list of things to learn for March? Getting better at hooping- I can do some tricks, but I don't yet look graceful. I've been in a dancy mood as of late though. I want to spin and glide everywhere, which can be a bit embarassing, but still fun! :D Oh, I'm also trying to learn to play the ukulele, but we've only got a souveneir one Bryan got from a friend who went to Hawaii, and it refuses to stay tuned for more than 2 minutes at a time. I'll practice my fingering and strumming, and when I start getting better, I'll pick one up. I've seen them on Amazon from 40$, which isn't bad at all! Oh, but back to hooping- I need to build my own hoop still! I have pretty turquoise and purple duct tape! I did shell out some cash for a Hoopnotic hoop, but I also want to see if I can't make my own. Seems pretty straightforward.
I don't terribly mind that Bryan and I spend a healthy chunk of change on dining out. It's his line of work, and somewhat of a passion of mine. We went to La Bonne Soupe Cafe today for lunch, and split a smoked trout (don't cringe! Suprisingly tasty!) sandwich and mushroom soup. MAN, it was deelish and hit the spot. The sandwiches there make me feel like I'm backpacking in Europe, though I've never done that... Still! I need to know where I can get that baguette! Perfect balance of crunchy outside and soft inside. Maybe I should just collect the fixin's for unassuming but A-Freaking-Mazing Euro-style lunches. It seems like the trend in lunch (are there lunch fads?) nowadays is BENTO BENTO BENTO! And mad props, no doubt! But a simple fantastic baguette with good cheese, fresh veg, and I guess, smoked fish just makes my day! Mmm.
I think I'm going to at least defrost a ciabatta roll and garlic that shit up when I get home. MMmmmmMM!
