Last night I was sitting at home, watching TV, and realizing that the things I was seeing on NBC were only a couple miles away from my couch. What did I do? I gathered a team, got off my ass, and went down to Grant Park.
No regrets about that.
I had a good feeling about it. I wasn't worried, nor was I really surprised when he won. I knew that if McCain won we would be fucked, and after I move away in June I probably wouldn't move back.
The energy was something I've not felt in a long time; save Radiohead at Lollapalooza. There were people sitting in the highest trees, standing on top of portable toilets, running a virtual muck in the streets. The city had, thankfully, set up large screens everywhere so we could stand and watch him speak without having to go through the shit storm that was lower Grant Park.
Some how I managed to run into Liz, Aaron Krupp, Nikki and Adam Young on the way back to wherever we were heading next. This is pretty insane considering they projected around 1 million people to be in that crowd.
He was so calm and sure of himself, but never cocky. He spoke slowly and he knew when to pause; people needed time to cheer and clap. His wife and daughters were there looking overwhelmed with a range of emotions, I'm sure. He made me remember that, yes, absolutely, we can... and we will.
I didn't have much emotion. I didn't have emotion until I watched his speech for the 2nd time, today in bed after I'd just woken up. I'm happy for America. Now we don't have to go down the shitter any more; eventually we may even be *gasp* RESPECTED by other countries! What will we do with ourselves next? Buy a yacht?
Happy election, everyone.
