Background: Here is what wikipedia has to say about the plot of Please Save my Earth:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Please_Save_My_Earth "The story centers around high school student Alice Sakaguchi, her seven-year old neighbor Rin Kobayashi, and five other teenage students who have recurring collective dreams about a group of alien scientists stationed on the moon observing and collecting data about the Earth.
Initially, when Alice learns that fellow classmates Jinpachi and Issei have been having common recurring dreams since middle school, she thinks nothing of it until she has one of these "moon dreams" herself. Because of the nature of these dreams, the way Issei always dreams as the same person, and Jinpachi as well, now that Alice has provided a third perspective, they start to believe that people who dream as the other four scientists in their "moon dreams" can each be found.
Almost like it's a game, the three make plans to seek these other people out in the hopes of making sense of these dreams. After a suggestion from Issei, and a little bit of time and luck, they are finally able to make contact with the other four people. But as the six teenagers and one child start to piece together the timeline and content of their dreams, they began to realize that their "dreams" are not simply dreams, but rather suppressed memories of their past incarnations (as those same moon scientists) that ended tragically. And now, as their "game" begins to unravel, the kids must strive to come to terms with what happened in their past lives, as they struggle to prevent their past incarnations' rivalries, jealousies, and dubious actions from taking over their new ones."
Mokuren is one of these alien scientists, and she is Alice Sakaguchi's past incarnation. Her powers made her a Kiches Sarjalian, a sort of holy icon to her people. She was born to two former Kiches who had been unhappy in their positions as designated saints. Though by law Mokuren was to be sent to Paradise when she turned three, her parents were very reluctant to give her up. They saw no holiness in the office of a Kiches Sarjalian, they only knew that they had to give up their daughter before they got to know her. When Mokuren was finally sent to Paradise (a sort of convent where they raise Kiches) she missed her parents terribly, and her unorthodox views on what it meant to be a Kiches gave her a lot of trouble. She dreamed of going to Earth, a planet for which she felt a strange sort of nostalgia, but she was told that her duties as a Kiches would prevent her from going.
In order to go to Earth, Mokuren made plans to get rid of her Kiches powers by falling in love and losing her virginity. Throughout her teenage years she had many hopelessly romantic fantasies about it, but she continued studying hard. When she turned twenty and was allowed to attend university, she studied biology in order to eventually apply to go on the next scientific mission to Earth. She landed a position there before ever meeting the man she would fall in love with.
Mokuren and six other scientists studied the Earth from a base on the moon. She fell in love with Shion, the base's engineer, but Shion had issues and unfortunate drama resulted. Shion was a war orphan who was never given any love as a child and consequently denied it out of a false sense of pride. He resented Mokuren's priviledge, and her connection to a goddess who had never been kind to him, while simultaneously being attracted to her. He was constantly picking on her, the big jerk. It would all be fun and games until he really upset her, and then she would have to cheer herself up by singing. But the moon base had no growth-suppressing mechanism, so weeds would sprout all over the base, breaking computers and machinery, which Shion would then be forced to fix while the other scientists weeded. These shenanigans went on for a few months, perhaps a year, and then their homeland blew up. This plunged the entire group into a depression until Shion and Mokuren had the idea of going to live on the Earth, but Gyokuran (another moon scientist) was against it, because it went against regulations. Their leader agreed, but Shion would not accept that decision. He started going around to the other scientists one by one, asking for their passwords and trying to talk them into going down to Earth. He suggested that, with the help of their futuristic technology, they set themselves up as gods on Earth, and he was subsequently locked up.
Wanting to go down to Earth, Mokuren asked Shion to reconcile with Gyokuran, and he made her a deal. Shion told her he loved her, and said that he would reconcile with Gyokuran if she had sex with him. She agreed. She was doing it because she loved him. He was doing it because he wanted to fuck over Sarjalim by stealing Her last Kiches from Her, and fuck over Gyokuran (another moon scientist) by bedding the woman Gyokuran loved. When Mokuren realized Shion's motives, she refused to go any farther, but he forced her. He effectively raped her. Despite this, it seemed as though Mokuren and Shion were both beginning to work through their issues when the plague struck. Of the seven scientists, Mokuren was the second-to-last to die, and managed to enjoy some brief, platonic happiness with Shion before the end, but her story will only conclude with the reconciliation of her next incarnation with Shion's.
Of course, that might be difficult, considering that instead of being reincarnated as shy violet Alice Sakaguchi, Mokuren has been resurrected in Mayfield.
The wikipedia glossary of terms from Please Save My Earth does a good job of explaining the peculiarities of the society from which Mokuren comes from:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Please_Save_My_Earth_glossary Personality: Most people's first impression of Mokuren is that she's somewhat of a Mary-Sue. She's kind, polite, beautiful, intelligent, spiritual, and she even has super-speshul psychic powers which are widely regarded in her society as being gifts of God. Men fall in love with her right, left and center, and women tend to resent her for being so perfect. And, as you can imagine, Mokuren does not enjoy the attention. It means she's rather lonely. She's only ever had one female friend, her Lian assistant Mode (who practically raised her upon her arrival in Paradise), and her Kiche keeps men at bay. They say they love her, and if they do, it's partially because of the exoticness of her Kiche, but that very part of her means there's a line they daren't cross. If they ever had sex with her, she would lose her Kiche, and they would be responsible for 'defiling' her.
But she hasn't been given everything just because of her Kiche. Despite her somewhat heretical views on Sarjalim, she worked hard to master the Kisanado (for the enjoyment of her plant friends.) Kiches are allowed to attend University and even get a PHD after they turn 20 and complete their education in Paradise, but anything they do must come second their job as Kiche Sarjalians. So Mokuren also had to work doubly hard to juggle her Kiche responsibilities and her studies in biology, and even had to fight the State in order to be allowed to go to Earth.
Mokuren's mother once told her this: "How can they expect us to understand pain and suffering without ever knowing love? A Kiche is to teach love, to advocate it to others, but she's never allowed to marry, herself. How could we espouse what we never understood, what we never experienced, because it was forbidden? The grass and the flowers may suffer, but we can only cry and sing. The people we know suffer too, but what can we do about it?" These words are at the core of Mokuren's beliefs. Kiches have special powers, yes, but these powers don't allow them to see into people's hearts. The people in Mokuren's society tend to see Kiches as miracle workers, but there isn't much they're really able to do. Older Kiches might have the power to heal, but even they can't bring people back from the dead. And when they failed to make a miracle, the people blamed them.
This is why Mokuren can't stand people only seeing her as a Kiche Sarjalian. This was one of the reasons she was so attracted to Shion - instead of fawning over her because of her status as a living saint, he outright shunned her (and on a few rare occasions, seemed to forget that she was even a Kiches.) This is also the reason Shion was able to hurt her so badly. The reason she agreed to have sex with him is because she really thought he loved her, and she believed this because she thought he didn't care that she was a Kiches. She was wrong. But such was her love for Shion that even though he had betrayed her, she went against the other moon scientists to rescue him from his imprisonment, claiming that they were engaged. What Shion wanted, Mokuren thought, wasn't her love. What he wanted was to let someone know, anyone, how lonely he felt. What he wanted was for a Kiche to redeem him. But even though her heart was breaking, she forced herself to put on that act which she thought he wanted from her, because she loved him, and she wanted to be with him.
Mokuren's feelings about her Kiches are not entirely negative, however. One of the few things she is completely confident about is her singing. She loves to sing, and she's good at it, and song is a direct connection between her and plants. Being able to communicate with plants is very important to Mokuren. Most of her best friends are plants. In fact, when the Kiches Elder gave Mokuren a prophecy, she said that Mokuren would never lose her Kiche, because there was no way she could ever endure never being about to speak to plants again. So despite all the blame she heaps on to her Kiches, it is very important to her, and she would not give it up willingly without being absolutely sure that it would be worth it.
All this to say that despite all the things Mokuren has going for her, she doesn't have a very high opinion of herself or of her role as a Kiches. She wants to be liked, but this leaves her vulnerable, so she covers up her weaknesses with a facade of almost arrogant confidence, grace and charm. She drops it quickly in front of friends, but it seems to have served her well when in the company of strangers.
Abilities: She's able to commune with plants and animals. When she sings, plants grow riotously out of control, but not in a useful combat-like way. They just really like to hear her sing. She has limited telepathy - she can sense when people are communicating telepathically around her, but she can't necessarily tell who is talking to whom about what, and, if she is touching someone, she can also show them visions drawn from their memories, or, curiously, from the memories of their future incarnations.
Another note about Mokuren's Kiche - although it was supposed to dissappear if she lost her virginity, it did not go away after Shion raped her. There is much in-canon speculation as to why this is, mostly having to do with who didn't love who, and it's all sort of irrelevant. Mokuren believes it didn't go away because Shion didn't love her, Shion believes it didn't go away because Mokuren didn't love him. Both these theories are patently wrong, given the fact that Shion did love Mokuren and vice-versa. It is my theory that Mokuren's Kiche is permanent, though I doubt this will be put to the test in Mayfield.
