5 - In which we try this one more time

ACTION: [Huh? Mokuren comes to in the kitchen of 336 Brady Lane, where she, or drone-her, or whichever drone she just replaced, had apparently been cooking. But this isn't her kitchen. This isn't the house she was in before. She drops the knife she hadn't even noticed was in her hand, and goes into the living room, where a schmaltzy portrait of ( Read more... )

[This severely limits the choice of icons that I can throw your way. Anyway, Berwald just came home from school and like the good 14-year old boy that he is looked for his mother to say hi.

He smiles at her and gives a small wave, waiting for her to finish the phone talk.]

[Mokuren's never had non-drone children before. But she took her responsibility as a not!mother seriously, even so. This kid doesn't have quite the same look as the drone-kids she had two months ago.]

Hello. What's your name, then?

[She's in for a big surprise when he gets un-droned, unless Finland tells her about him first. Also in case you wonder about the name, I'll refer to the drone as "Berwald" and the real one as "Sweden".

He looks at her for a moment in slight confusion and then drops his bag next to the kitchen table.]

It's still Berwald Väinämöinen, mom.

[Vana what now? And people say her name is hard to pronounce. At least all the syllables are spaced evenly and there are no weird accents on the letters. She's a little dissappointed that he's a drone, thought she wasn't really expecting anything different. Sigh.]

That's right. My mind was elsewhere. Forget my own head next.

Don't worry about it.

[He sits down.]

You worry too much, you'll become strang elike dad and Mako.

[How old is this kid? 13, 14? According to Mayfield, she'd have to have had him when she was ten years old. And the drones don't find THAT strange?]

Hah! I've never been normal.

[He shakes his head very earnestly, the expression a bit strange for a drone, as if the expression should look different but it is not quite possible on this face, and stalks over to her to hug her.]

But you're the best mother in the world.

[Mokuren sort of pats his arm absently.] Flatterer. Now, off you go do your homework. [Because that worked great with her previous drone-kids.]

But Mom, I haven't eaten yet!

It's only four o'clock. If you really need something to tide you over until dinner I saw a jar of cookies on top of the fridge.

But your food is a lot better than that at the school cafeteria! [already on his way to the cookies.]

[Cafeteria food was just as terrible on her home planet as it is in Mayfield, then; some things are universal. And Mode taught her how to cook to ingratiate herself with the plebes.]

It's not hard to do better than cafeteria food. No more than three cookies!

[Meanwhile Mokuren is familiarizing herself with the kitchen. Since this is a different house and she's only just arrived. She only suggested the cookies because the were right in plain sight.]

[Takes all three at the same time and places them on a plate before moving to put the jar back into place and stopping.]

Do you want one too, Mom?

[The kitchen is a little different from your ordinary Mayfield kitchen, it is obvious that at least one non-drone uses it quite often, and there are some handcrafted objects that look a bit out of time, more like someone built a thousand years ago.]

istheatmosphere March 6 2011, 20:20:47 UTC
Well, maybe just one.

[Well, the old weird stuff is probably not something a drone will acknowledge, so there's no point in asking.]

[Gets one out of the jar and puts it down on the plate before putting it back up on the shelf, and then he goes back to the table and sits down there.

Insert some stories of little interest about his school day here.] How was your day?

Oh, you know, nothing much. [Is this kid really a drone? They didn't normally pay this much attention to her. The scrutiny is kind of embarrassing.]
