personality: On the surface, Gandalf seems like an irascible old wizard who does not suffer fools lightly. His perceived impatience however was usually intended to quell overeager Hobbits or overconfident Men. In fact, Gandalf was a creature of great compassion and patience. He loved Middle Earth and all the things that it and the various races had to offer. Each one intrigued and delighted him in some fashion. His faith in the hearts of Men and the stoutness of Hobbits seemed to know no boundaries and was proven out to be true at the conclusion of the War. While he has little tolerance for overconfident braggarts, the wizard will show exceeding faith and fondness for those whose hearts are true and a bit humbler.

Gandalf has a love of good pipeweed, the occasional good drink, and good food. For a powerful wizard, his needs were few and his pleasures quite simple in nature. He enjoys telling stories, at times conjuring images to go along with them to further embellish the narrative.

Like most of his fellow Istari, he prefers operating behind the scenes, guiding the lives of Men and Elves and Hobbits alike. However, he will not shy away from a fight. He stood against the Balrog of Moria, a creature of equal power, in order to buy the Fellowship time to escape the mines to safety. Gandalf has led men in combat against Goblin threats, rode out onto the plains at Pelennor to save Faramir and his men against the attacking Nazgul.

abilities/powers:
Abilities : He is a keeper of the Sacred Fire, the flame of Arnor - a powerful blast of pure light capable of driving back the darkness as well as servants of the dark. It was this light that he used to drive back the Balrog in Moria and later the Nazgul outside of Gondor. It’s a fairly powerful weapon, one he won’t use unless the need were dire.

Low grade conjuring, with a special affinity for magical fireworks (his magical display once involved a gleaming red and gold dragon that swooped through Bilbo’s party, causing quite the stir.

Foresight - his ability to read people and their destinies. Gandalf doesn’t tell fortunes, but he can discern when fates are intertwined (Frodo and Sam particularly) and moves to help people along their destined path. He doesn’t give overt direction, preferring to move far more subtly and help nudge them in the right direction.

Combat - Gandalf still bears Glamdring, the sister sword of Sting, and is no slouch when it comes to hand-to-hand combat when necessary. It was a combination of his skill in standard combat and magical combat that allowed him to kill the Balrog of Moria before the battle claimed his own life. He is also a skilled leader, directing Men in combat on more than one occasion.

Gandalf also bears one of the three Elven rings of power, Narya, as given to him by Cirdan the Shipwright before he traveled to Middle Earth. It is described as having the power to inspire others to resist tyranny, domination, and despair as well as giving resistance to the weariness of time.

first person sample:
[The comm bobbles to life as it’s curiously poked and prodded at, giving the viewer a skewed image of white robes, a staff and a beard.] .. very curious indeed. Ah, yes. There.

[A moment more of adjusting before it stops turning crazily and settles in on his face. Gandalf quirks a smile.] I think it is safe to venture that I am no longer on Middle Earth, nor have I ventured as far as the shores of Valinor. Quite strange.

I do hope someone will have need for an old wizard during my time here. I would hate to become.. [his smile is all mischief, his eyes glittering. He loves a good adventure] bored.

third person sample:
It was his turn to keep watch that night. Like the elves, Gandalf had no real need for sleep for long stretches of time, and the men and hobbits in their little party needed their rest far more than he. So he sat up, puffing quietly on his pipe and allowing his mind to drift as he stared into the fire. Narya was warm on his finger, the faint gleam of the red stone visible to him alone.

His gaze slowly circled the small camp. First it fell on the quietly sleeping Elf and the loudly snoring Dwarf not far away. A faint smile curled his lip. Even he hadn’t foreseen the great friendship that had been forged between Legolas and Gimli. But that was one of the joys of Eru’s Plan and the great Music of the Ainur. The larger, stronger melodies had been written long ago, but it was the smaller eddies and swirls of music and fate that always intrigued Gandalf. It was the unexpected alliances, friendships, the sparks of nobility and courage that gave him such hope.

The wizard’s smile faded a bit as he shifted his attention to the four sleeping Hobbits. The path they were all destined to walk was a difficult one. But each one gleamed as bright as a star in his vision. He had faith. They would persevere and they would emerge stronger, brighter and better for it.

case no: Is there a preferred case number you'd like your character to have? Nah - go nuts.
