By my friend Alice <333

In Dreams
Alice Baskous

Girl among the cypresses,
olive-eyed, what dreams did you dream
last night? What tales of lingering kisses
beneath knobbed citrus boughs, no mean
embraces, but sweet and pure, had fled
from lip to lip, and soul to soul
in your solitary bed?

Did he bring you flowers to deck your hair,
clouds of baby's breath - which suit you well -
or fragile pansies, dark and fair,
the enchantresses of many an amorous spell?

Or did he call softly from a height
too great to fathom, and you, below,
caught in a dark complexity of night
trying to reach him, taken by fright
in that too lonely plight?

But I, too, would see you walk hand in hand
on some private beachen strand
belonging to two, to him and you,
and thus pace the midnight through -

And you, dark-curled daughter of the waves,
would grasp his hand, but not too close,
belonging too much to the deep sea caves
and the high tide's foaming host -

And that is your sole complexity,
O pale and dreaming child,
that you cherish the ideal, and scorn the real
though the real too be sweet and mild,

O Alice, Alice, woman-child,
who may know your passions wild?
And who can guess that when you dream,
you cannot 'be', nor 'seem'
but in every fairy gust,
whether in innocence or in lust,
you are as the turning moon
or a peacock that must groom
itself to keep its rainbow sheen:
but if you must,
and will do naught else,
then dream, and only dream.

..and by one of my favorite poets:

The Lake Isle of Innisfree
William Butler Yeats

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there, a hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.
