Leonard knew Jim was upset. In fact, the last few weeks had been painful for him, on the Enterprise. Trying to get his friend to speak to him properly, instead being blocked out. He knew it was his way of dealing, but Leonard was upset too. He was losing his friend - his best friend and it bothered him
( ... )
When her office door slid open, and Leonard stepped in, Christa smiled. her smile turned into a grin when he spoke and she softly nodded. "I believe they did, Doctor," she said.
Once the door had slid shut behind him, she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his body. Christa knew things couldn't be easy for him, and she wanted to be there for him. "How are you feeling?" she asked.
Leonard took a little step forwards to meet her, his arms slipping around her to hold her to him. Some of his anxiety seemed to melt away, just from holding her. Being with her usually had a calming effect on him, and it was working a charm right now.
"I'm feelin' okay," and in that very moment, he was.
She continued to hold him, her hand running up and down his back. After a moment, Christa pulled back and softly kissed his lips. "Were you okay doing the transport?" she asked with concern. "Do you want anything to drink? Maybe some water?"
"I got through it," he commented with a small smile. "Nice lil' hypo helped out," and burying his head in his hands had worked a beautiful treat. "Water would be nice though. Thank you."
Christa gave him a loving smile and ran her fingers through his hair before stepping away to get him some water. Opening her small fridge, she took out a bottle and handed it to him.
"I've asked my assistant to bring your belongings to my house once they arrive," she said before holding up her hand. "And don't worry - Command knows about us. I thought it was best to be honest about it."
His eyebrows shot up at the very mention of her saying so and though he muttered thank you to her for the water, he cleared his throat in surprise. "An' what do they think? I can't imagine they were happy."
"Not at all," Christa said with a low laugh. She went over to her office's couch and sat down before motioning for him to join her. "However, they know the both of us are mature and good at what we do so they said they would over look it."
"That surprises me. A lot," he was stunned, really, that they weren't being dragged over coals for it. Or worse, his transfer stopped. At her gesture he moved to sit with her, lifting his arm to drape over her shoulders to hold close.
"They might feel a little guilty for what happened to me," Christa said. "If Command had done more research before sending all of us off that day..." She trailed off, knowing she didn't have to tell him what happened since he'd been there.
Reaching down, she took his hand. "I've missed you."
She really didn't need to. Even now he had the rare nightmare, sending him back to the moment he had to operate on her, the moment where every little choice literally was the difference between life and death.
He squeezed her hand gently with his own and leant close to her, pressing his lips to her cheek tenderly. "I've missed you too."
Christa was glad Leonard didn't say anything more about their first mission on the Enterprise. It was best left in the past.
Her eyes slid shut when he kissed her cheek. It had been too long since anyone had been this tender and sweet with her. Opening her eyes, she turned her head and gave him a smile.
"How about we get out of here? We can go back to my house and have some lunch, and I can show you pictures of your new Sickbay."
He resisted anything but necessity when it came to thinking about what had happened during that mission on the Enterprise. Too painful, added to the back of his mind with a mountain of other painful memories that he let brood under the surface.
"Sounds perfect. I've read up on th' schematics an' it sounds like a good lil' sickbay."
"The pictures do it more justice," Christa said with a small.
She stood from the couch and smoothed down her uniform pants before nodding toward the door. "My car is parked on the other side of the building. Let me grab my things, and we can go," she said.
Going over to her desk, she placed a couple PADDs in her bag before shouldering it. She then indicated for Leonard to follow her out of her office. "Is there anything special you want for lunch?" she asked as they started down the hallway.
"I can imagine," he watched her rise up and move, following suit and straightening out his own uniform. Keeping pace beside her, he shook his head, half tempted to reach for her hand despite his usual negative feelings towards a PDA.
"Lets go for somethin' you pick. I'm open to anythin' so long as I eat."
Once they were clear of all the offices, Christa reached down and took his hand. She hated that she had to act professional around him, but it was part of her job. And, if they were going to work together, they had to get used to it.
"Why do I always have to chose?" she asked with a small laugh.
Stepping outside the building, she led him to her car, while using the remote keychain to unlock the doors.
