Christa let out a small noise as she stretched out in the bed and allowed her eyes to slowly open. It was still early for a Saturday morning so she snuggled against Brian, her leg draping over his. She always did like it when he had time to come down and spend the night with her. Christa found she slept better with him there.
Sleeping had become the enemy over the last month and a half. When the Academy started to be stalked by someone, Christa never thought she was in danger. Most of the people being attacked were younger cadets; the ones that were reckless and left their windows open or their doors unlocked so their drunk roommates could easily slip in if needed. Christa wasn't like that, and she was always careful.
Then one night she woke up to find a man in her room. The situation had been traumatizing and she had fought him off, which caused him to run off. The following day, a cadet by the name of Jack Bates turned himself in, saying he was the one breaking into rooms and assaulting women. He was sure Christa had seen his face and figured he was as good as caught.
The whole thing had left Christa shattered and unable to sleep through the night without waking up with a nightmare. With her roommate gone for the summer, Christa was alone. Brian came down when he could but when he wasn't there, it was hard.
One of the doctors at Starfleet medical had given her some sleeping pills. They had helped but he refused to keep giving them to her, saying she needed to seek professional help. However, Christa didn't have time to sit in a therapist's office so she found a cadet that was selling illegal sleeping hypos and bought some from him. Knowing she was breaking several rules, Christa decided to keep it a secret. And it was hard since sometimes the pills caused her to be groggy and moody the following day.
"Brian?" she whispered as she lightly poked him in the side. "You awake?"
