The thing is, if we look at his voting record before he ran, this is in accord with his existing beliefs. Just like I wont be surprised when he tries to obliterate the second amendment wholeheartedly. This isn't him being untrue to his own core values, this is people who projected any belief they wanted onto him from campaign soundbites, instead of looking at his track record.
