Yo ho yo ho, a Piebald life for me.

Jun 14, 2004 17:24

I can't believe Brian asked if I had a good time or not.

"You can't NOT have fun at a Piebald show."

"'Can't not?'"

"Yes, to the point of double negatives!"

Best show ever? Okay, probably not. But if Piebald had played "All You Need is Drums to Start a Dance Party" and "The Six Eighter," and if the Jealous Sound had played "Guard it Closely"... it could have been close.

Ahh, I had been looking forward to this for like two months, so of course, at the last minute I started worrying that it was not going to be as great as I'd hyped it up in my mind. It certainly started out that way. Due to the lengthening summer days, I lost track of time and at the point I was supposed to leave, I was just hopping into the shower.

Brian called a while after the doors had opened and was all, "Are you still coming? I've been here for an hour and am playing hackysack with the dudes in Piebald."

After I got dressed, I realized I had lost one of the CDs he lent me that I was supposed to be returning... so my sister and I spent a good half hour looking for it with no luck. I still have no idea where it is. I think spiders ate it. :( So this made me even later, and then the bus was late, so I got to Slim's at nearly 9:30.

Literally the first person I saw, as I was walking up the stairs to get in, was John. And he saw me, so he said hi. I asked about "Guard It Closely." They weren't going to play it; they were sticking to the faster songs for Piebald tour. He answered like he had either been asked that question a few times before or if he had somehow been expecting me to ask. I found out I had just missed Northstar's set, but I was right on time for theirs.

Brian found me as I was talking to John so he introduced himself and told him how he liked the band and blah blah blah. Then we went and tried to get a decent spot upfront. I forgot that Piebald has a lot of tall guys for fans, dammit. As we were waiting, Brian told me how his friend had been coming through SF and dropped him off so he'd been hanging around since 5:30 (!) playing video games and stuff with Piebald and Pedro. He had told Aaron that I was obsessed with them. What?? I am...not. Maybe just a little?

The girls in front of us were so completely outta the '80s. Especially the one with the big mohawk/mullet and cropped white demin jacket. Dangling earings and pumps, oh my.

The Jealous Sound's set seemed more lighthearted then usual. John was particularly bouncy. Sometimes I couldn't hear Blair's vocals well and more than once I couldn't hear Pedro's guitar at all. It seemed mostly like bass and drums, which was definitely interesting but a bit tragic during "Priceless" and some other songs. At one point, I lost my heartbeat and it was all just bass drum in my chest. I haven't had that feeling in forever. I talked to Pedro about it later and it was probably because I was standing on John's side, but still, I've never really had a problem like that at Slim's before.

This was their set, more or less:

Bitter Strings
For Once in Your Life
The Fold Out
Hope for Us
Priceless
Does that Make Sense to You
Anxious Arms
What's Wrong is Everywhere
Naive

While they were striking down their gear, I looked over and saw Pedro crouched down talking to someone in the crowd. Then suddenly he was waving, and it took me a minute before I realized that he was waving at me.

A bunch of people in the front and center left after JS, so I got a much better spot for Piebald. I turned to Brian and said, "I'm giddy like a school girl." But he didn't hear so he didn't get the pun. I managed to take a few pictures but only two or three seem worth a second look.

Piebald is so great. Travis' long hair doesn't look so bad in person, but it seems to make him look even skinnier. I miss the glasses though. Aaron shaved the beard. I think I am going to stand on Aaron's side from now on because he is way more fun than Andy, even if you do stand the risk of being kicked in the face. At one point, he unplugged his guitar after a riff (I wasn't looking at him so at first I thought some technical thing had gone horribly wrong) and ran all around the drumset before plugging it back in and playing again. Luke got a new drumset. During "Present Tense," he was supersmiley for some reason and every time I looked over at him, I started cracking up.

Piebald's set, probably in horribly wrong order:

The Benefits of Ice Cream
Location is Everything
Karate Chops for Everyone But Us
Rich People Can't Breed
Rules for Mules
The Monkey Versus the Robot
American Hearts
Haven't Tried It
Part of Your Body is Made of ROCK
Present Tense
Long Nights
All Senses Lost
The Stalker
--- requests:
Grace Kelly With Wings
Fear and Loathing on Cape Cod
Just a Simple Plan

Those last two songs were such a waste. They could have totally been "All You Need is Drums to Start a Dance" and then "The Six Eighter." That would have been awesome. I am not loud enough. Fear and Loathing? Simple Plan? Psh. "The Six Eighter" is probably the best song off the new record. It's like 4 songs smashed into one. At first it's eeeh, but then it gets really good, and then it gets even better, and then it gets even better...er. I love how it ends.

You rush, I slow
We will not get to the middle
But I know

I stop, you go
We will not meet in the center
But I know

Obviously, I should be choosing the setlist. haha. I haven't seen so many people singing along to Piebald...ever? I'm not sure. But yeah, enthusiastic crowd. People other than me were doing "The Stalker" handclaps. The girl next to me even did the complicated last one, though she messed it up. I'm not that great at it either though, so maybe I should hush. They make me grin ear to ear. All of you who weren't there are jealous.

Both Piebald and JS went and played my live favorites last ("The Stalker" and "Naive" respectively) when they both usually don't close with those songs, and it had me in suspense until they DID play it.

Travis had announced that they were going to the Barfly later that night and that everyone of drinking age was invited. Brian said he was probably going to go, though he was worried about how he was going to get back to Berkeley. He hung around to buy a Piebald shirt and talk to Blair. We went out through the back, and he introduced me to Aaron (whom everyone calls Stuart but he introduced himself as Aaron, so whatever).

I mentioned "The Six Eighter."

"We play that one! You should have requested it."

And "...Dance Party."

"We play that one, too!"

Oh well.

It was actually the first time I've ever talked to Aaron. It's usually just Travis or Andy. I think last time I told myself that next time I'd actually talk to Luke, but I didn't. haha. Then Brian and I headed back in because I wanted to say bye to Pedro and hadn't seen him outside. He was standing right in front of the stage, so I went over and we talked for a bit. This is going to be their last tour, and then they're recording again!

Originally JS were going to go to the Barfly with Piebald, but I guess they were too tired for that and decided to go back to Berkeley instead. I mentioned this to Brian later, and I think he bartered pot for a ride home, haha. Pedro also put him to work loading their merch.

Their drums were still in the alley. Apparently Adam had been majorly slacking, because both Blair and Pedro were mad and went to get him. When he came out and started loading, he turned to Brian and me, and asked, "Who are you??" Brian introduced himself and when I did, Pedro yelled from somewhere I couldn't see, "You know her! She's been to like a million of our shows!" ha.

He looked blank for a second, then recovered, "Oh, yeah. You have a cooler jacket now."

More yelling from Pedro: "She's had that jacket since after the Black Rebel show!"

That was surprising, so I yelled back, "HOW can you remember that?!?"

"It's my job to remember things like that!"

But I didn't see Adam last time, so he'd never seen the jacket before. Then it was after midnight, so I had to catch a train home. I said to bye to Brian and Adam and went on my way. I wasn't sure where Pedro was exactly, haha, but I had actually said bye to him three times in the course of the night, so that's okay. Some guy who asked the time followed me for a little while trying to convince me to let him drive me home, which I found a little ironic, because earlier Pedro had mentioned how he always worries about me walking around by myself. Karate chops and mace, man. Most people are harmless anyway.

At 3am, I got a txt from Brian asking if I got home okay and mentioning how he had just had the craziest time with "the jsound." I was way too tired to ask about the details.

I wish I was going to the show in Sac tonight. I wish they had done a 3-night stint at BOTH or something instead of just this one show. Now what do I have to look forward to this summer?

Today is Kalinda's birthday. She got the Pirates of the Caribbean DVD. Now we can see Johnny Depp as a pirate all the time! Hurrah!
