Well, since you asked... ismilesometimes September 28 2005, 16:08:34 UTC
Basically, it's not real time.

When the original Final Fantasy came out, the need for turn based battles made alot of sense. The Famicon just wasnt all that powerful. In order to include a really rich magic and weapons system, it really was necessary to basically pause the image, lose some of the sprites on the screen and take it slow. On top of that, the original Final Fantasy was still cementing RPG's as a video game genre, and so the pauses between attacks and the like made sense; they felt like you were playing D&D, and had to pause to roll the dice. With the 8 button controllwer ( 4 on the Dpad, select, start, A, B ) it also wasnt possible to really include enough buttons to control one character real time ( despite the fact that Link was so artistically done ) let alone a full party of four different players. A real time game with the same depth of Final Fantasy just wasnt possible.

But it is now.

To say that current game systems (or really anything after the 64) would be unable to process a good real time RPG is to ignore most of what has come out in the last 10 years. The graphics cards of todays concoles ( or even the nextgens which come start to come out in a matter of weeks ) can handle far more than FF has been feeding them. As for RPG fans wanting a turn based battle system, well, look at the success of WoW ( the first MMORPG to use real time battles ) and tell me that with a straight face. It's not like FF isn't going that direction anyway, look at the timer they've installed. As for the buttons, well, the current PS2 has thirty seven thousand buttons so I don't think it would be to hard to have a button for everything. Hell, you assign one trigger to each character, and your set. A realtime final fantasy would be pretty easy to do now, and pretty freaking sweet. Sure you'd get a bit of flack from people saying "Thats not FF!" but then they'd play the game anyway, because fanboys will be fanboys, and then they will realize how freaking cool Final Fantasy can be.

FF8 has sort of what you're talking about, although not exactly real time.

u can go to the options and set the battle system to "active" and then whenever your time bar fills up you just attack so its kind of more real time becuase if you're takin forever lookin through menus and shit the enemy will just keep knockin the shit out of you instead of waiting for you're turn to be over

but i guess thats as close as it gets.
