Rec list.

OK. I signed up for Snupin Santa this year, and it occurs to me that whichever poor soul gets my name might come to my journal looking to see what I like. So, I've put together a bit of a list in no special order.

Ten Aprils by busaikko
I know, I said I hate mpreg. And I do. Unless, it seems, it's written by busaikko. Believe me, I've tried other authors whom I like, and have never read past a few pages, at best. But "Ten Aprils" is one I've read many times. The reason I like it so much is that while Lupin may be pregnant, he is still very much a man. He is also strong, manipulative, clever, and a fruitcake loving vegetarian.

Lupin, while in the custody of the werewolf camps, had the choice of going out and mauling people, or being a subject for a mpreg experiment. He chose not to kill, even though he knows that, so far, no one, child or werewolf, has survived pregnancy. Seems the transformation causes spontaneous abortion, and as there is nowhere to abort to, well, it gets messy. But he is still fiercely protective of "Bump," and will do what he can to ensure Bump has someone to care for him. Oh, yes. The chances of him surviving the delivery surgery, should he manage to bring the baby to term, are nil. So.

Meanwhile, Voldemort is practically at Hogwarts door, and Harry is so full of rage that he's in danger of becoming the next Dark Lord himself, should he manage to dispatch V, something they fear he won't be able to do without the help of Fawkes to destroy the last Horcrux. But Harry is too full of hate to summon Fawkes, so he needs help. But there is no time. However.

Poppy has a special time-turner (yeah, I know, I don't like time-turner fic either) for pregnant girls so they can go off with an escort, have the baby and not miss school. Which means.

That Snape, with the entire restricted section of the library miniaturized for traveling, is sent off with Lupin to do research and "look after" Lupin. Right.

He also has a copy of "She's Not Mad, She's Pregnant: Suggestions for Expectant Fathers" from Poppy, which he takes surreptitious peeks at in an attempt to understand Lupin's behavior.

Why do I love this fic? Humor, love, and fruitcake. How can I stand mpreg? Because of the characters. I think busaikko puts it best in the scene where Snape has just been saved from a Quintaped by an eight month pregnant Lupin.

Severus thought that Mad, Pregnant, Whatever would expect him to jump between Remus and certain danger, but it was harder being a gallant knight when the fair maiden had just as much testosterone as he did, and better reflexes.

I adore this story.

First There Was Romania by snegurochka_lee
A story of incest (Bill and Charlie) and what it can do to two brothers. Again, I know I said I liked happy or hopeful endings, and this does not have one, but it is still one of my favorite stories. The writing is as sharp as the images, and they cut like a knife. It is clear, concise, and will make you weep for the hopelessness and loss. Um, yeah, sounds good. But really. This story will make you feel what Charlie feels, live what Charlie lives. It's amazing.

Midnight in the Owlery by thetreacletart
Summary: On a sleepless night Remus Lupin finds himself alone in the Hogwarts Owlery. He scribbles a note on a spare bit of parchment and sends it out into the dark night. What happens when someone answers?

The lovely story of the reawakening of two lonely men and their slow-building relationship.

The Adventures of Remus J Lupin, Aspiring Sex God by snegurochka_lee.
Written for Lusty Month of May, this is one long story of... well, the title says it all, really. Blistering hot and funny, it is classic Lee pr0n.

Caustic by snegurochka_lee.
Another example of Lee's brilliant use of language. I wish I could write like this!

Here Where the World is Quiet by busaikko
The war is over and Snape has survived, but is lame, and has very limited options. In fact, his only one is "Headmaster" at the Scrimgeour Lycanthrope Academy, a school for werewolf children, and home to some 5 or 6 children who are orphans or whose parents didn't want them. His mandate was simple: Provide them with Wolfsbane and daily occupation. Teach them as you see fit. Report any violent outbursts. Keep them away from regular people. And there was Lupin, who had come with the children like a trading card with a chocolate frog.

This story hurts so very badly, but it is also a wonderful story of love. And yes, it has small children, another thing I said I hated in fic. And I do. Really.

Animals by busaikko
Some of the Death Eaters became Animagus, and when the end came, a few of them refused to change back. Bellatrix the goat went home with Tonks, and Severus the snake went home with Lupin, who found he rather liked having a pet snake. Very funny, hot, and heartwarming.

A World, A Book by busaikko
Busaikko's answer to DH. A must for all lovers of books in general and the HP series in particular, but who didn't like JKR's treatment of our boys.

Anatidaephobia by almost_clara
(anatidaephobia: the fear that somehow, somewhere, a duck is watching you)
Magical AU, laugh till you cry. Lily match-makes for her friend Remus.

Tempest Tossed by scribbulus_ink
Magical - sort of - AU. Snape and Lupin are stranded on a desert island. No, really. Lovely slow build to the relationship, good characterizations, and the best OC ever.

There are also more recs if you search my "rec" tag. I know the list is heavy with stories by both snegurochka_lee and busaikko, and while they write different types of stories, I love almost everything each has written.
