YES of Obama!
YES for Marriage Equality in Maine!
YES for Marriage Equality in Maryland!
YES for the defeat of the Constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage in Minnesota!
YES for Iowa for not allowing the Religious Right to oust Iowa Supreme Court Judge David Wiggins. Wiggins was one of the judges who declared the ban on same-sex marriage in Iowa to be unconstitutional, thus allowing gays and lesbians to wed in Iowa. His position was up for retention vote, and there was a huge campaign by the Religious Right to oust him.
One state to go.... Washington State has not been called yet. Fifty-one percent of the vote is counted, and Marriage Equality is leading by 3.6%. Cross your fingers!
For years, a BIG talking point for the Religious Right has been that Marriage Equality has never won at the ballot box, and that every time citizens have had the opportunity to enshrine bigotry (ban same-sex marriage) in their Constitutions, they have done so. NO MORE! Maine is the first state to legalize same-sex marriage from a voter initiative! Minnesota is the first state to reject an amendment banning same-sex marriage! TAKE THAT you *haters and bigots!
This is HISTORY, folks!
I only stayed up until 1am, so I'm now off to listen to my President's acceptance speech.
*I just want to say that I do NOT believe the majority of folks who vote for inequality are haters and bigots. I think a lot of them may not have a grasp of the full consequences of their actions, and have been led to believe the leaders of the Religious Right who are, unquestionably, haters and bigots.
ETA: Marriage Equality has PASSED in Washington State! That's a clean sweep for Equality!!
