We had a storm... a while ago - they're all starting to blend together - where it snowed for a day and a half, then turned to rain and sleet for half a day, then back to a day of snow. Don't know how much we got all together because it was so compact. I tried to push a path across the deck through 4" of the stuff and couldn't go more than a foot or two before it was too heavy to push. With my shoulder, I can't lift it, so... I waited and K came along and shoveled it all, just as he has all this winter, and all last winter. I'm in love. Seriously.
Then, we had another storm. They said we got more snow than the
first one, and it's stacked on top of the other stuff, and ya know? I really don't care anymore. There is a problem with this snow, though. It's sticky. The other snow piled up on stuff and looked pretty and all, but then the sun came out and it fell off.
This stuff. I went out at 11:30pm with Martha, and it was stuck to everything. My bird feeders looked like birch logs hanging on the line, which itself was a perfect cylinder about 2" in diameter, instead of its normal ¼". I tried to knock the snow off the line and feeders, and it wouldn't let go, so I scraped off what I could and brought the feeders in by the wood stove for the rest of the night. I have a birch tree, a good 8" in diameter, that is bent almost flat to the ground. My odd lilac took a bad hit, and my honeysuckle bushes, which are brittle wood anyway, are smushed. The apple trees continue to amaze with their sturdiness. I took a few pics, and as soon as they're developed, I'll post a few.
That's the weather, now for
the stupidity.
CO State Sen. Dave Schultheis was the sole dissenting vote on a bill to fund mandatory screening of pregnant woman for AIDS, (If caught early enough, the fetus can be treated so the virus won't transfer from the mother.) because you get AIDS from being promiscuous, and well, in his own words:
“What I’m hoping is that, yes, that person may have AIDS, have it seriously as a baby and when they grow up, but the mother will begin to feel guilt as a result of that,” he said. “The family will see the negative consequences of that promiscuity and it may make a number of people over the coming years begin to realize that there are negative consequences and maybe they should adjust their behavior.”
Check out the links for more stupid - if you can handle it.
And the Brilliance.
I saw Milk yesterday. If you didn't see the Oscars, Sean Penn won best actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk. His speech was
another win. Dustin Lance Black won the Oscar for best screenplay for Milk. His speech was
as moving as his screenplay.
If you haven't seen it, go. The writing is brilliant and the acting is outstanding. It is the story of an ordinary man who did extraordinary things, and changed the world.
(Hunkers down for another storm.)
