Title: Wishing You Were Here
Under the silvery light of the moon, the vampire Arcueid Brunestud could be found walking along on the beach, watching the waves gently lapping on the beach, pondering as she took her nightly stroll. If she fancied it, she would even take off her stockings and shoes and let the warm water brush against her feet and dig her toes into the rough sand. Her expression as she went about such a frivolous activity was the very image of serenity.
Sometimes, she found a fellow islander who also happened to be staying up to converse to and she enjoyed that. There were other times where she asked either Shiki or Hisui to stay up and talk to her since she just wasn’t used to sleeping through the night, but even they couldn’t answer to the vampire’s whims. Nevertheless, no matter who she talked to, Arcueid was always grateful for the company.
But it just wasn’t the same.

It was a night like any other. It was a starry night with no clouds to cover up the dark canvas of the sky. Arcueid found herself staring up at the vast space above her all alone that evening. The only thing she could hear around her was the sound of the waves, rolling in and out. There was no one around her for what felt like miles. Alone under the blinking white lights, she began to recall a precious memory…
"Charden, people make wishes on stars right? You know, there are so many stars maybe because there are so many wishes!"
The vampire princess said those words smiling innocently and with ruby eyes glistening at the man who had joined her for her midnight walk. He replied,
"If you were to wish on one of those stars, what would you wish for?"
Arcueid turned her head towards him smiling in her carefree manner.
"Oh, I don't know. In the first place I didn't have a wish. There wasn't much to wish for... But now, I have so many wishes. I don't know how many I could make!”
Arcueid flinched as a sudden pain flashed through her body, but she quickly forced the sensation back down. There was a certain pain that lingered however…
“… Aha. It’s still is painful isn’t it?” chuckled Arcueid. Wrapping her arms around herself, she inhaled and exhaled deeply. She smiled as if reassuring herself of something.
“I said I wouldn’t know how many wishes I could make… But I can think of only one right now. I’m just being impractical again aren’t I?”
Lifting her face towards the sky, Arcueid put on another smile even though she felt as if her eyes were going to overflow. Looking directly at one star, she took another deep breath and with as much confidence as she could muster, said,
“I wish… You could be here and walk with me again.”
With that, Arcueid turned her back on the beach and back to her residence to put herself to bed and back to her dreamless slumber with only her wish to comfort her.
