I am doing a lot of these types of going home drabbles lately. ):

Challenge: Going Home
Title: Her Realizations

She could picture their last conversation clearly-- they had dragged themselves out of the haunted house. Katara was still excited over their adventure, while he was more exhausted than anything. For the first time in the year they had known each other, he had lost his temper at her. Katara had brought up the subject that they may never see each other again after that night, and Ryoji brushed it off. That was probably a sign, she thought, and chuckled at the irony of it.

They had a lot of plans that were to be unfinished now. Learning how to drive, planning a party, and even more absurd ideas that they came up with suddenly. It slightly pained her that their final adventure was something that Ryoji didn't even want to be a part of, but she was glad that he did. Katara briefly wondered if the snake would be lonely now; she decided to look for it later, but even after she obnoxiously honked the car's horn and yelled into the infamous well, nothing appeared. Reaching the conclusion that it really was the scarf that it was attracted to, the bender gave up the search. It could find another article of clothing to love someday.

Although she had spoken about it a lot, she had never actually gone through the experience of someone close leaving the island. It wasn't as dramatic as she had envisioned it-- he was simply gone, vanished, as suddenly as he came. No long-winded farewells like from the stories she had heard, or passionate confessions that people sang about. Her thoughts wandered to Ranka, and utter guilt washed over the girl. Choking back a sob, Katara shook them away. She'd have to deal with that hurdle later-- if they even had time to do that, anyway. Ranka might be gone next. She laughed again, louder this time, at the realization that she was jealous of the singer over nothing. The last conversation the two girls had, with Gilbert as a witness, was for nothing.

Her feet had carried her to the waterfall. She had once regarded it as their spot, and was secretly possessive over it. Katara hated the thought that he may have taken other people to it, but now anyone could go and she wouldn't bat an eye. The spell was broken, and she finally saw the island for what it was: A bored deity that didn't care about who stayed or who went. And oddly enough, the idea comforted her. She knew that he wasn't sent home just because she had some feelings for him, or because he was her best friend, or just because he was connected to her at all. He left for the same reason that everyone else had before him, and for the same reason she would too someday.

She removed her clothes, took a deep breath, and dived into the cold water. She wondered if her roommates would like fish again for dinner, and if another weird event would happen soon. On the shore, a black bracelet sat next to her mother's necklace on the pile of garments. It no longer only represented his memory or their promise, but the fact that nothing-- even the island-- was forever.
