South East Asia

Dec 30, 2004 09:34

I recently told someone that in response to the crisis in South East Asia I had sent a letter to the Mayor of my city requesting that she help the people there. I urge everyone to do the same thing.

If you live in Peterborough, our mayor can be reached at the following email addresses:

info@sylviasutherland.ca ; mayor@city.peterborough.on.ca

For anyone who is interested, here is the text of the letter... again, please contact your local mayor and request aid!

Your Honour:

As I'm sure you realise, the crisis in South East Asia is extremely dire and serious. The death toll is steadily rising and there is a real need for international intervention.

I am not sure if most people realise the contribution of the South East Asian community during the Walkerton crisis as they sent aid, mostly in the form of bottled water, to the afflicted area. As we are all international citizens I believe it is our obligation to respond in kind. I will be contributing on my own, but I believe we should be aiding the afflicted area as a city as well.

While I understand after our own difficulties, our resources are somewhat tight, anything that could be given in monetary, food, water or medical aid by the city would be greatly appreciated and as a tax paying citizen I believe it is important for Peterborough to make a contribution. I also realise that the timing is poor, as you probably do not meet with the council until after the holidays. I would submit, however, that people are suffering and dying right now and that it is incumbent upon us to suspend our holidays for an instant to help those in need. In fact, that is really what this season is truly about.

I hope that you will impress upon council that it is right and proper to send aid as soon as possible and that the city will do so immediately as the need is urgent.

Thank you for your time.
