Girraween Camping Trip Log

Day 1
Arrived in National Park. Practised a little off-tracking through scrub. Spirits were not high. I was not fully into it. Later scrabbled up some boulders. Spirits lifted. Went through “caves” which were really just some boulders together that left dark tunnel areas. Watched sunset overlooking a vast area. Enjoyed chatting with various people whether it was the three amigos (Justin, Chris, Stefan) or Dan, or the Germans (Katja, Judith) or the Austrians (Kersten, Natalie) or my favourite American girls (Laura, Natalie).

Night time was session time. All piled into my tent. Our camping area was the party place for all the others. At one point, we had eight people in the tent.

Silly Chris

Day 2
First day of hiking. Took rough off-tack around bouldery mountain. Challenging to remain optimistic when the end of the off-track is no where in sight. Stopped for lunch at creek area. Beautiful day. Jumped in ice cold creek water to cool off. Second off-track much nicer. It was through open paddy. Saw heaps of roos. Once at camp, visited with all the groups. I think everyone was happy to see me. Honestly, not one member of any group did I not like. I think Sally likes me. Call it mans intuition. She kept staring at me. I should make a move. She is hot. Had good chat with Tony. Talked about snakes he saw and other adventures. He has some stories to tell! Went to sleep early. Apparently, other two groups got together. Oh well, I was tired as we had hiked a lot.

Nice creek

Day 3
Long day of hiking. 7 km to Bald Rock in morning. Climbd Bald Rock with CB (Chris Black). Steep grade on rock. On top, beautiful panoramic. After lunch, long 7-8 km to camp. Nice campsite at top of hill overlooking valley area. Climbed to top of south bald rock for sunset. Memorable.

Night. Went to bottom camp. Watched stars a little ways up rock surface. Justin dropped water bottle down mountainside, sending a loud crashing noise through the valley in an effort to conduct a scientific experiment.

Day 4
Final hike back to bus. Long off-track. However, teamwork prevailed. Had a good navigational system down. Tried to remain in good spirits. Also, tried to cheer up other members of the group with my witty sense of humour. Thought I was going to die before we finally reached the bus. Last leg of trip involved hiking on open track with the sun beating down on us relentlessly.

Competent navigators?
