Chapter 4
“You’re crazy, Blair,” Jenny sighed, leaning towards the lighted mirror in the bathroom of the restaurant and wiping a smudge of mascara from the corner of her eye.
“No,” Blair said slowly, drawing out the word. “Crazy is going all the way to Brooklyn for a thank you. I mean, has he not heard of a telephone? It’s creepy, Jenny. He could be some sort of deranged stalker and you’re his next victim.”
“Blair!” Jenny cut in with a laugh. “Stop, OK? He just wanted to thank me as a friend.”
Blair sighed, throwing her hands up. “Jenny, please. You can never be too careful. You know, I bet Chuck could use his P.I. guy to run a background check…”
Jenny reached out and grabbed Blair’s arm. “No. No background checks, no nothing. I’ll probably never see him again, anyway. You have a better chance at seeing him-he goes to NYU.”
The horrified look on Blair’s face would have been comical if not for its sincerity. A hand fluttered to her chest. “That’s not funny, Jenny.”
Jenny couldn’t help the giggle that bubbled out of the lips as she pushed open the bathroom door and started back to their table. Blair followed a second later, the look of disgust still marring her delicate features.
Chuck and Nate stood in tandem as they approached, ever the well-bred gentlemen. They had barely retaken their seats when Blair attacked Nate.
“What are you going to do about this?” Blair demanded, looking intently across the table at him.
Jenny sighed and leaned back in the wingback chair. “Blair…”
Nate swallowed his drink of water hard, eyes wide as he looked from his ex to his girlfriend. “Do about what?”
“Jenny’s stalker,” Blair retorted bluntly, dismissing their approaching waiter with a flick of her wrist.
Chuck leaned forward, his eyes narrowed. “Jenny’s what?”
“Blair, he isn’t stalking me!” Jenny exclaimed at the same time.
Nate rolled his eyes and shook his head at Jenny. “He just came by to say thank you. And Jenny told him no to dinner, so-”
Jenny winced. “Nate, I didn’t-”
“He asked you out?” Blair hissed, her gaze swinging to Jenny. Her eyes widened in amazement. She reached across the table and grabbed Jenny’s arm, her nails digging in.
“As a thank you!” she replied, defensive. She shook free of Blair and drained the last of her water. “Can we just drop it?”
“It’s really no big deal,” Nate said, an underlying edge to his voice.
“Are you sure?” Chuck pressed.
“Blair’s imagination is just going into overdrive,” Jenny replied firmly. She gave Blair a pointed look. “Again.”
Blair’s jaw dropped open. She snapped it shut with a snort of disbelief. “Well excuse me for caring.”
“Leave it alone, Blair,” Nate said gently, not without compassion. Despite her highhanded way of dealing with anything she perceived as threatening, Nate knew that deep down Blair just wanted to protect the people the cared about most. He was still a little amazed how close she and Jenny had become, though.
Jenny sighed again and glanced at Nate. “We should get going. I promised Lily I’d be back in time to help with the cake testing.”
Nate stood up and helped Jenny, taking her hand in his.
Blair sank back into her chair, pouting.
“Blair, I’ll call you later,” Jenny said with a shrug. “Bye, Chuck.”
“You two have fun,” Chuck said, smirking.
Blair leaned forward once they left, looking intently at her boyfriend. “Chuck-”
He already had his phone out. “What’s his name?”
“Scott Hansen,” Blair answered with a grin, loving that he was able to read her so well. “He goes to NYU.”
“I’ll see what my guy can dig up on him,” Chuck assured her, reaching for her hand and giving it a gentle squeeze.

Jenny pushed the fifth slice of cake away, shaking her head. “No more. I am on sugar overload.”
Nate laughed and swiped his finger across her icing, licking it off. “I like the buttercream frosting.”
“I’m going with the red velvet,” Serena announced, smiling. She had stopped at the second plate, insisting she didn’t need to taste another cake after the red velvet confection.
“I’m with Nate,” Eric agreed.
Dan was finishing his sixth piece of cake. He swallowed the last bite, looking around the table at the other five occupants. “Hey, I’m a sucker for Devil’s food.”
“Chocolate is good,” Jonathan agreed. He swung his gaze to Jenny. “Jenny?”
Jenny glanced around the table and shrugged. “I like the marble cake with the buttercream, too.”
Eric and Nate high-fived each other as Lily approached. She and Rufus had agreed to hold the cake tasting at the café so Rufus could count the inventory when they were done since the café was closed on Sundays. They had both decided to let the kids chose the wedding cake, and had watched the six teenagers argue over cake and icing for the last forty minutes in complete amusement.
Lily clasped her hands together, her eyes smiling. “So have you reached a decision?”
Serena sighed and tilted her head back to look up at her mother. “Jenny, Nate, and Jonathan all decided on the marble with the buttercream,” she answered.
“Good choice,” Rufus agreed, coming to stand beside Lily. He settled an arm around her waist.
“I’ll go make the order with the caterer,” Lily said. She looked up and gave Rufus a quick, chaste kiss before stepping around him and heading for the caterer.
Serena fixed Jenny and Nate with a mock glare. “I still say the red velvet would have been better.”
“Yeah, but it would have looked like the cake was bleeding when they cut into it,” Dan pointed out.
“Bloody cake does not spell wedded bliss,” Jonathan added with a grin, eliciting a laugh from Eric.
Serena made a face. “Yeah, OK. Maybe you’re right.”
“I’m going to start counting the inventory,” Rufus announced, starting for the back.
Dan tossed his napkin and stood up to help. He and Jenny had volunteered to help their father with the counting when they were finished. Eric and Jonathan had plans for a PSAT study session while Nate and Serena were taking different trains back to their separate colleges.
Jenny twisted in her seat to face Nate, her expression resigned. “Guess this is goodbye?”
He looked equally as regretful. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers once, twice. “I’ll call you as soon as I get in.”
Serena groaned. “You two are-”
“-nauseatingly sweet?” Eric finished with a grin.
Jonathan stood and pulled Eric up with him. “We should go.”
Eric glanced at his Rolex and his eyes widened. They were going to be late. “Yeah, wow. OK.” He gave Serena a quick hug and waved at Nate before heading for the front exit with Jonathan.
Serena sighed good-naturedly. “Let’s go, Romeo. The train will be leaving soon. We need to get you back to Columbia before you turn into a pumpkin.”
Nate stood slowly, pulling Jenny into his arms and kissing her soundly. He pulled away and looked at her. “I’ll talk to you soon.”
She smiled up at him. “You better.”
He leaned in for one last kiss when he noticed her eyes go wide and her body stiffen.
“What the hell?” she muttered.
Nate turned sharply to see what had grabbed her attention, and his eyes went wide.
Rufus came up from the back just then. “Oh, hey, Scott,” he greeted warmly.
Jenny looked at her father and back at Scott. “Dad … you know him?”
Rufus gave her an odd look as Dan joined him. Dan went to Scott and shook his hand.
“Hey, Scott,” he said with a smile. He glanced around the room. “Oh, hey, this is Scott-”
“-Hansen,” Jenny finished, confused. “We’ve met.”
Dan gave her an odd look. “You have?”
Scott nodded sheepishly. “Uh, Jenny was the one who helped me out when I got lost last week.”
Dan laughed. “Small world, huh?” He looked at his sister. “Scott and I met at school. He mentioned he was looking for a part time job, and Dad hired him to help out at the café.”
Jenny looked at Nate, who looked just as amazed as her. “Hired him?”
“Yeah,” Rufus chimed in. “We’ve been getting busier, and I figured that you would need more time off as the wedding got closer to help Lily with the dresses.”
Scott smiled warmly at Jenny. “Guess we’ll be seeing a lot more of each other, huh?”
