He looked at my hands sullenly.
"Don't write something you might regret."
"I can't help it."
I looked out the window and the leaves fettered in the sunlight, catching onto a wave of gold whenever the feeling struck. In and out, up and again. The couple standing on the sidewalk stared at the floor--stunned silence overtaking the dullness of a fresh full day. The wind began again and carried a few stray boneless leaves down the street, a cascade crawling along the pavement toward the sleeping sun.
"Anyways, it doesn't matter. No one will ever see."
I put the heavy pages down and walked to the door. He didn't follow me.
