three more things

Songbirds: I like birdsong except when I'm camping out and trying to sleep and they are SINGING in my GODDAMN EARS. One bird that I can instantly recognize by its song is the canyon wren, which is common here in the desert southwest, especially in the canyon country (duh!) where we often hike and raft. This site has a recording of its song, a series of notes which decrease in pitch and increase in duration. While hiking (or sitting on our patio) B and I will sometimes hear one, but in the past few years we've realized that I always hear them first because he can no longer hear the highest notes. I suspect I'm missing the first high notes as well.

Tape: When I was helping to move my parents to assisted living I found a box of the hand-labeled cassette tapes I laboriously recorded off vinyl records (and a few of those newfangled CD things) my college friends loaned me. I threw them out.

Sandals: I recognize two seasons of footwear: boots, and sandals. I have no other types of footwear outside my special-purpose sporting footwear like hiking boots and running shoes. It's currently sandal season. I keep a pair of crappy old ugly Tevas near the kitchen door for the purpose of walking Lucy-the-cat or going outside to grab something from the garage. For going out in public, I have a nice pair of leather sandals (also Tevas, though that's a coincidence) which I wear probably 90% of the time despite having the world's ugliest toenails (due to being a runner).

I cannot abide thong-style footwear that puts something between my toes. Ick.
