trick or treat part 2: original works recs

Nov 03, 2018 17:34

[ETA authors] There are OMG 80 original works in the Trick or Treat Exchange this year (so far - the collection stays open until author reveals indefinitely)! Here are my favorites, which tend to humor rather than horror, but often include both:

Proceed to the Route by
scioscribe (Slowly Dying GPS System on a Rural Road at Midnight) - When possible, make a U-turn. Go back, go back, go back. A short and atmospheric bit of subtle horror.

A Larger Vow by
marginaliana (Moss Covered Unicorn) - "Tell me a story," the unicorn said. "And you may have a leaf of my moss." A lovely and rather sweet story about two adventurers, looking for a quest, who encounter a unicorn.

Kilo India Tango Tango Echo November
Edonohana (Grizzled Soldier Who Keeps Adopting Abandoned Kittens) - When the Marines are sent to protect Springfield, MT from an alien invasion, a grizzled staff sergeant finds a whole lot of kittens in need of tender loving care. This is the most adorable grizzled veteran story in the history of forever!

Vicious Cycle by
NeverwinterThistle (Loyal human second-in-command in love with her female alien commander) - F/F set in a future where Earth's problems have been solved by an alien race. Thought-provoking, with good world-building.

Work for Hire by
rosefox (Tarot Card Artist) - You no longer take commissions. You've learned that the hard way. But this one is different. Atmospheric and ominous, with the horror implied but never stated. Second person POV.

Nobody Likes a Skinny Liver by
yhlee (Young fox spirit whose relatives are disappointed they haven't seduced or murdered anyone yet) - The problem with being a fox spirit is all the interfering relatives who want you to hurry up and seduce and eat someone already. This is adorable and very funny, with great dialogue.

Lyle by
havisham (Giant Spider in a Dad Suit) - Lyle Tannen wasn’t a regular dad. He wasn’t a cool dad either. He was a giant spider in a dad suit and he loved his children very, very much. This is hilarious in an entirely deadpan way. I lost it at: And he definitely would not devour any of member of his family, no matter how much they annoyed him. Take that, Mom!

Hell Sick by
Phlyarologist (Demon Who Has Accidentally Locked Himself Out Of Hell And Just Wants To Go Home, and several other OW tags) Okay, so, this guy may or may not have put the elevator to Hell out of service. But that could happen to anyone, right? Cut him some slack. This is fabulous! Poor woeful homesick Vhaldorgos-Jalalloloth the Failboat Demon. He's a great character, as are all the other tag-characters who make cameos here, and the banter is awesome.

If you enjoy these stories, do tell the writers. (But tell me too, because I always like to hear that people find my recs useful.)
