Trick or Treat!

YOU GUYS I GOT STUFF!

Ahem. I feel vaguely guilty that I got FOUR ghostly gifts for the Trick or Treat Exchange and I only wrote two. But only vaguely guilty! Not so guilty that I'm not enjoying my prezzies, which are all really excellent (and looking forward to reading more widely in the collection after work)!

Alphabetically by fandom:

Captain Flint's Ghosts (0 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Black Sails
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Miranda Barlow/Captain Flint/Thomas Hamilton
Characters: Miranda Barlow, Captain Flint (Black Sails), Thomas Hamilton
Additional Tags: Trick or Treat 2016, Trick Or Treat Prompts Challenge, Fanart, Digital Art, Ghosts, Haunting, Grief/Mourning, Extra Treat, Art, Supernatural Elements, ToT: Chocolate Box, ToT: Monster Mash
Summary: James McGraw is dead, but those who loved him still return to Captain Flint.(spoilers for episodes up to and including S02E09)

Gorgeous gorgeous art! I love the expressions on their faces - James so weary and sad, like he's just fallen asleep over his charts with the aid of a bit of rum; Thomas so caring and concerned; Miranda so serene. A great composition, too, with the candlelight glow, and honestly my favorite bit is the vague bits of window showing through the ghosts!

(There is another Black Sails art gift for someone else, Firebrand and Siren, that is also lovely - it's Anne Bonny and a mermaid. Probably done by the same person, who is, I suspect, an artist from a former fandom of mine la la la.)

A Moment Beneath the Water (903 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Black Sails
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Captain Flint/Thomas Hamilton, Miranda Barlow/Captain Flint/Thomas Hamilton
Characters: Captain Flint (Black Sails), Miranda Barlow, Thomas Hamilton, John Silver, Charles Vane
Additional Tags: Ghosts, Implied/Referenced Character Death, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Trick or Treat 2016, ToT: Monster Mash
Summary: Flint sees ghosts of his past, urging him to join them. Does he succumb to the temptation?

This is incredibly creepy, which means it is PERFECT. Flint's lovers and his rival all pulling at him, beckoning, taunting, promising that "it's only a moment beneath the water"...I swear my heart was in my mouth as I read, wondering whether Flint would be dragged down to his untimely demise. I love this a lot, and more people should read it - I know there are more Black Sails fans out there!

Sacrifice (1463 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: The Mark of the Horse Lord - Rosemary Sutcliff
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: Major Character Death
Characters: Phaedrus (Mark of the Horse Lord), Titus Hilarian (Mark of the Horse Lord)
Summary: Titus Hilarian and Phaedrus' fates are joined together.

What I like most about this story is that it surprised me. Rather than following one of my prompts, it takes the general idea I was looking for and runs with it in a completely unexpected (to me) but totally plausible direction. I hadn't even thought about Phaedrus haunting Hilarion, but their final exchange in the book really does set this up well, the twinge of sympathy Phaedrus feels for the man whose career he's about to ruin with his last act, the cautious respect they have for each other at the end.

What Cannot Be Had (851 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Vikings (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Gisla/Rollo (Vikings)
Characters: Siggy (Vikings), Rollo (Vikings)
Additional Tags: ToT: Monster Mash, ToT: Extra Treat, ToT: Trick - Freeform, Ghosts, Haunting, Post-Season/Series 03A, ToT: Chocolate Box
Summary: In Paris, Rollo's life is perfect. Until a familiar face starts haunting him.

Rollo's transition in the show from Northman to Norman, from Ragnar's brother to his enemy, must surely have left deep scars in his psyche. I love the idea of Siggy as a sort of Viking avenging angel, reminding him by her presence of who he used to be and what (and who) he has left behind in his old life. If you are a Rollo fan (as I am) you should read this!

I am pleased with the reception of the two fics I wrote; one is, I think, a tiny fandom, but the recipient's comment delighted me, as it shows they grokked perfectly what I was trying to do, and so I don't feel bad that it's the only one! My other is considerably more accessible and therefore more popular, and its recipient left a very nice comment there as well.

Happy Halloween to all who celebrate!
