I don't usually write remixes that treat the original as "what really happened" - that are in some sense fanfiction of the original, rather than an entirely new story based on the same premise - but that's what happened here. The original story was about how Dee (Lieutenant Dualla) was inspired to join the fleet by reading romance novels set on a battlestar, and eventually discovers that the author is one of the officers on the Pegasus. I took the flip side by writing about that author, who is a fairly minor character and so I could make stuff up like crazy. :-)
The fun thing, I think, is that as
lls_mutant said in her comment to me, "the original was really about why we read, and this is about why we write, and that makes it a neat foil to the original." And of course as a fic writer I am just full of reasons about why we write - and also why writing books, and thereby creating entertainment for others, is important even when you're fleeing the destruction of your home planet and fighting an army of cloned robots.
But to be honest, it actually started out of an attempt to rationalize how these things even happen on board a spaceship. Where do they get the printing press? The paper to print on? Heck, when they show the characters drinking in the bar, where does that booze come from? And that's how this got written.
Anyway, I've popped my BSG-writing cherry. Though I don't really feel inclined (at the moment) to write more fic in this fandom, it was fun.
