stuff what I liked recently

Where 'recent' means 'in the last two weeks', because at first I was waiting until I had enough to post, and then I got hit by the Great DreamHost Zapperoo, and then I was too depressed to read anything for a while. I was going to organize things nicely, but now I just want to get it posted. So here's some vids and some fic in a bunch of fandoms, and a multifandom extra, too.

Hornblower

Lullaby by sdwolfpup | Horatio/Archie, vid, PG, hankie warning, spoilery. This is an older vid that brynnmck pointed out to me. It's beautiful and sad. Waah.

SGA

I Am A Scientist by martoufmarty | Rodney, vid, G. This is a remake of one of her earlier vids, and now contains spoilers through Tao of Rodney. I like the way she's played with the colors, and the way the internal sync works - the movements to the beat are really cool. The message is a little mixed, as Rodney is not exactly strictly a scientist here, but it's funny and makes me ♥ Rodney all over again.

Wallpaper by lim (imeem link) | Ensemble, vid, G. Lim's vids push the boundaries of what I consider fanvids; they are technically brilliant, but because I am not a particularly sophisticated vid fan, they tend to go over my head. But I really like this one, set to "I Saved The World Today" by the Eurythmics, partly because of the very cool use of color and effects and stuff I don't even know how to describe, and partly because it takes in everyone in Atlantis, from Caldwell to Kavanagh, sending the implicit message that everyone is an important part of the bigger team that is Earth's presence in the Pegasus galaxy.

due South

The Sight of the Stars by brynnmck | Fraser/Vecchio, R, short story. What happens after Starman, when Fraser and Ray have to share a room - and a bed. This is the setup for innumerable PWPs, and so it is here, but the adorable characterizations and impeccable dialogue (especially her Ray voice! Woo!) lift it out of PWP territory.

Xenoglossy by madsciencechick | Fraser/Kowalski, PG13, short story. Again, this is a type of story that has been done before - Ray and Fraser and the difficulties of communication between them. But oh, the language used is beautiful, and it's beautiful without getting in the way of the story. The descriptions are fresh and evocative but always serve a purpose.

The Fraser Record (Excerpts) by custardpringle | Fraser and Kowalski gen or slash, as you see it, R for violence and theme, short story. This is a fusion with House of Leaves, which I have never read, but after reading the comments by people who have, I'm...not sure I want to. It's a highly stylized horror story, told in fragments, with impeccable voice and great tension and pacing. I especially like the story lurking in the lacunae, what isn't written making a negative space that tells as much as what is.

Real Boys (A Chip Off the Old Blog) by Salieri (troyswann) | Fraser/Kowalski, PG13, AU, novella. I recced a shorter version - what became the first chapter - before. But yay, Salieri continued and expanded this dystopian cyberpunky idea to a novella, and, wow. Fraser's a bot looking for the killers of the AI that created him, and Ray's a cop looking for answers. It's got great nods to canon, a cleverly imagined plot, and an ending that knocked my socks off.

And finally, for your amusement, a little crossover art: Captain Jacks by The Theban Band.
