Title: Meet in the Middle
Rating: PG-13, I guess
Summary: She isn't surprised he has gone; she wouldn't have wanted him to stay.
Disclaimer: I don't own Lost. At all. I wish, but alas...
Author's Note: For that_evening, who wanted Sun/Sayid. Used for au100, prompt #56: breakfast.

The bright light shining through the window wakes her. She opens her eyes to find herself alone, wrapped up naked underneath a white blanket. She stares blankly up at the ceiling, recalling the night before. The roughness of Sayid's body against hers, the way his dark skin had looked against hers, so much paler.

But nothing more than the way he had looked at her. She doesn't know what he was seeing, but she is fairly certain it wasn't her. But that is okay. She wasn't seeing him either.

She hadn't expected him to stay, so she isn't surprised. They are changed people, shaken by losses so profound that they knew nothing would ever be or look or feel the same again. The longer they were around each other, looked at each other, the more they remembered before. When they had the people that they loved; when they were happy.

She isn't surprised he has gone; she wouldn't have wanted him to stay.

What does, however, surprise her is the room service tray across the room. She wraps the blankets around herself and walks across the room. There is a plate sitting there, an omelet platter, and a glass of orange juice. She looks for a note of some kind, but doesn't find one.

Sayid is a changed man, there is no denying, but this...this simple gesture reminds her so much of the man that she had once known that it cuts her deeply. She curses her memories as a tear spills down her face.

As she eats her breakfast, she allows herself to remember. Who Sayid was, who she was, before they'd lost the only things that mattered.

When she walks out of the hotel, she leaves what had happened behind. She's a changed woman. There's no going back.
