Title: True Love Stories Always Have Beginnings
Rating: PG
Summary: It had been painfully awkward, but she'd never had a more perfect moment in her life. Because it was them, the very beginning of them, when they didn't know how to talk to each other and everything was new. It was perfect because it would have been impossible to be any more imperfect.
Disclaimer: I don't own Veronica Mars. That would be cool, but, sadly, no.

Looking back on it, Veronica realized that Logan had been in love with Lilly for as long as she'd known them. Lilly loved attention, she always had, and no one gave her more of it than Logan did.
But her and Duncan...that was another story.
They met about a month after she met Lilly - when she was twelve. Duncan was kind of awkward around her, and as a result, she was awkward around him. After a while, it wasn't the "best friend and best friend's brother" kind of awkward, where they occupy a lot of the same space by default kind of awkward. It was more like the "when I'm over at Lilly's I spent a huge chunk of my time wondering if he notices me" awkward.
Looking back on it, Veronica realized that she first fell in love with Duncan on her thirteenth birthday.
Everyone, all of the friends that she had met through Lilly were filing out of the front door of her house. Her Mom and Dad had started the lengthy clean-up process, considering what a mess had been made of the house. Lilly and Logan headed out the door ahead of them, but Duncan stopped at her side by the door.
"Hey," he said.
"Hey," she replied.
"Nice party."
"Yeah."
It had been painfully awkward, but she'd never had a more perfect moment in her life. Because it was them, the very beginning of them, when they didn't know how to talk to each other and everything was new. It was perfect because it would have been impossible to be any more imperfect.
"Veronica…"
"Yeah?"
"When I said I didn't get you a present before…" He took a deep breath. "I was lying."
Veronica screwed up her face. She wasn't always the astute and observant girl she was now, so she had been confused. Duncan wasn't holding a present, though she guessed he could have something in his pockets somewhere.
"Where is it?"
"Close your eyes?"
"Duncan…"
"Do you trust me?" he asked.
She nodded. "Of course."
"Close your eyes," he repeated, softly.
So she did. And she waited, for about ten second, feeling incredibly silly. Then he kissed her.
"Happy Birthday, Veronica," he said, when she opened her eyes. She looked at him, his beautiful eyes and his perfect smile, and she knew now that the feeling inside her stomach at that moment was her falling in love with Duncan Kane.
