Title: The Second Time Around

Summary: Duncan has been in her life for so long, she hardly remembers what it was like before she knew him.

Author's Note: Set pretty much at the end of 'Donut Run'.
Losing Duncan the second time is no easier than the first time. It’s different, and at least this time she knows why, but it hurts just as much as it did the last time. Because she’s not only saying goodbye to Duncan, she’s saying goodbye to the last part of Lilly that she has.
Duncan has been in her life for so long, she hardly remembers what it was like before she knew him. He went from being her best friend’s brother, to her boyfriend, to her first love. If it’s possible, she had loved him more the second time they had found each other than the first. Now, it’s all ending. Duncan is leaving, taking his daughter, who’s namesake brought them together, and in a way, taking the first Lilly too.
It feels like only yesterday she was sitting next to Lilly on the bus, ditching class with her, talking to her about anything and everything. It feels like just yesterday that she lost her forever.
And now Duncan. She wonders how long the pain will linger this time? If she’ll look down the hallways at school and see Duncan in a crowd of people only to blink and have him be gone. She wonders if she’ll dream about him and wake up only to forget, for a few blessed seconds, that she had been dreaming. She wonders how long it will seem like it was just yesterday he had been here, like just yesterday, he had been hers.
She thinks, like with Lilly, it will be a long, long time.
