Fic: Cut Me Open (Claire/Thomas)

Claire had never loved Thomas. She looks down at her beautiful child sleeping, and she wants to say that she did, so that he will have some kind of real connection to his father, so that she can say he meant everything to her once upon a time.
She wants to remember Thomas as more than a man she’d been dating a few months before she became pregnant. She wants to remember him as anyone other than the man that had promised to do the right thing, to be a father to their child, and then ran away from her as fast as he could without looking back. Without even seeming to care.
She had never loved him, but she wants not to hate him. For Aaron. For the part of Aaron that his Thomas.
It gets mixed up in her head often, when she thinks about everything that has lead up to now, up to holding her beautiful baby in her arms.
All she does know for sure is that Aaron deserves to know his father. He deserves more than he will ever get. He deserves to have a normal life, grow up in a house, with a Mom and a Dad, and maybe even a puppy. He deserves more than to grow up in a hut on the beach, and with every week that passes it seems more and more like he will never have any of those things.
He deserves so much more than she can give him. For all that she knows she can provide him, it is the that she can’t that make her feel like she will never be the kind of mother he deserves. She can give him food, shelter, clothing, and love. But she will never be able to give him the one thing he deserves most: his father.
Thomas walked away from them before Aaron was born, he made his choice, and he left Claire to live with it. She hates him, but when she looks at their child, it ebbs if just a little bit. Because he was a lousy man, but he gave her her beautiful boy. And for that and only that, she thanks him.
