Title: Obstacles and Impediments
Rating: PG
Summary: What she wanted, she had to take. The opportunities afforded to her, as few and far between as they were, she needed to grab with both hands and never let go.
Disclaimer: I do not own Lost. At all. I wish but alas...
Author's Note: Another character study of Juliet (kind of, but not really, like
Evolution and Adaptation). Set during 'Not in Portland'.
Before this place, Juliet had never known herself to be the kind of person who would confront any obstacle, stand up to any impediments. She had never been able to confront her ex-husband when he had cheated on her. Could never force Ben to let her leave the island even though it was the only thing she really wanted.
But this place had changed her, forced her to adapt, to overcome, to go to any lengths to survive. It had also made her see that she could no longer live as the kind of person who couldn’t stand up to a philandering husband, or resist the control of a mad-man who bent others to his will.
What she wanted, she had to take. The opportunities afforded to her, as few and far between as they were, she needed to grab with both hands and never let go.
That is why, when Danny walks away from her with murder in his eyes, she knows what she has to do, what measures he has forced her to take. That is why, when she shoots him dead on the beach, she doesn’t blink until she knows he's dead.
Because all obstacles standing between her and her way home, her way back to her family, all impediments on that path are expendable. And all immediate threats need to be removed. This was what the island had taught her. This is what Ben had taught her.
