Title: Motivation
Rating: PG
Summary: Heart over head. It’s the way that Kate has always been.
Disclaimer: I do not own Lost. At all. I wish but alas...
Author's Note: Set at the end of 'The Hunting Party'. The fic is labeled with the pairing it is because it’s more about the dynamics of all the triangle than anything else.

Kate

Heart over head. It’s the way that Kate has always been. She jumps into things, follows her gut, her emotions, her instincts, and it isn’t until this moment, until she's standing outside of her tent, watching Jack walk away from her, that she realizes that maybe she needs new instincts. Maybe she needs to look before she leaps.

Sawyer tells her that he would have done the same thing, that she shouldn’t be so hard on herself. It doesn’t help. The memory of Jack’s indifferent strides away from her sit like a lead weight in the pit of her stomach.

She knows that Sawyer would have done the same thing, followed an hour behind if he were told to stay, and that’s why it doesn’t give Kate comfort. Because she knows he would have been wrong to do it too. And he doesn’t. Sawyer sees triumphs were there are none, is proud of things he ought not to be.

Kate takes no pride in disappointing Jack. Sawyer takes nothing but pride in disappointing Jack.

But even though he’s wrong, and even though she’s wrong, Kate has to admit, it’s nice to feel like someone is on her side. Right, wrong, it didn’t matter. Comfort is comfort.

Sawyer

He watches Jack walk away from Kate, stride faster as she obviously jogs to keep up, and thinks about the difference between the two of them. Him and Kate. Him and Jack.

Sawyer may have got the invite along, but only because he invited himself. If it were up to Jack he would have loaded up and gone by himself, a one man hunting party. Sawyer wouldn’t have taken being told ‘no’ laying down either. But, on the other hand, he knows without a doubt he wouldn’t have gotten caught either.

And then there’s Jack, who runs from Kate like she’s the plague. Unable to forgive and forget because he saw things in her that weren’t there. Sawyer isn’t that naïve, that deluded. He sees Kate for what she is, so he forgives her in Jack’s stead - in his own way. Because that’s all he can really do for her. He can’t tell her she’s not wrong, just not to let that own her. He can’t tell her Jack will change his mind, because the Doc’s as stubborn as a mule and he probably won’t.

All Sawyer can really do is stay on her level, let her know she’s not alone on Jack’s shit list and hope that helps in some small way. Jack is up on Kate’s alter, but Sawyer, well, Sawyer's standing right next to her.
