Title: The Harder They Fall
Rating: PG
Summary: The saying goes, “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.”
Disclaimer: I don't own Veronica Mars either. That would be cool, but, sadly, no.
Author's Note: Set post-'Credit Where Credit's Due', wherein Veroinca ponders Catilin's (you know, Paris Hilton?) exhile from the Cool Kids Club.

The saying goes, “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.”

Well. As far as Neptune High goes, Catilin Ford was a giant. I think that I should have taken some sort of satisfaction in watching her slink away, tray in hand, pride beaten and bruised, but I didn’t.

Even knowing the person that she was, the lengths she would go to in order to get and keep what she wanted, the lies she’d told and the betrayals that she’d perpetrated, I couldn’t hate or judge her.

Both because I am her, and because she is Lily. Or, I was like her, and she is like Lily. Men fell at Catilin’s feet, worshiped her like she was a goddess on high. Everyone wanted to be her friend, not for her, but the status that came with her friendship. She was so much like Lily was that I found it hard to watch her fall from grace with any kind of satisfaction.

But also, I couldn’t point and laugh like I might have wanted to, because I’ve tumbled down that mountain, head-first, and crash-landed where I am now, with one friend and a reputation that’s tarnished and shows no signs of not being so in the future. People who were once my friends now talk behind my back and spread vicious rumors about me, refuse to look me in the eye, or worse, air their grievances to my face.

I couldn’t hate Catilin, and I couldn’t judge her, because I knew what she was in for, where the life after being forced from the in-crowd leads: taunting, ridicule, and the over-all devastation of your self-esteem.

It’s a rude awakening to be sure, being pushed down the rungs of the social ladder one by one. And Catilin’s attitude never boded well for her survival of that. That is why, when Wallace tells me, a week later, that Catilin’s family has transferred her to another school, I am not only unsurprised, but envious.

I guess it just goes to show you, in Neptune, money can buy you anything. Including a new life, a blank slate. And the lack of it, keeps you stuck exactly where you are.
