It began, as these things often did, with a book. Specifically, a book of prophecy. With rather suggestive descriptions.

Bill, as a principal in a high school, day after day dealing with hundreds of rowdy disparate students and tens of underpaid, frustrated teachers, never expects to receive such a book from his superintendent. She comes to see him one day, drops the book on his desk, and asks with a gleam behind her glasses if he thinks it inappropriate.

He reads it, under protest, and a week later when she returns to his house to ask after his thoughts, he concurs. The book is highly inappropriate and sure to cause rebellion among the students. Bill believes in leisure - it's important to overall well-being. But, this book is the kind of subversive text that causes students to lose focus and have babies too early. In short, it encourages irresponsibility and lack of respect.

Laura listens to Bill with patience and asks questions to draw out more of his opinions. She relaxes while he talks, leaning back on his loveseat and calmly drinking her tea.

He goes to her after a while and touches her hair.

"You're not going to ban the book, are you?"

"No," she says.

He's irritated now. She's wasted his time. He demands, "Why the hell did you ask for my opinion if you'd already made up your mind?"

She smiles then. "I wanted to see you," she says, "and I thought maybe we could try a few things in that book."
