So, I have a spreadsheet problem. In more ways than one actually in that I can't help creating/fiddling with them when there's some numbers to be crunched as well as there being an actual file problem.
I have some large-ish amounts of data/calculations that make the files ~2.5 MB each in Office 2007, but not everyone has a program that can read the 'xlsx' files and they are probably for the most part too lazy to grab a converter. Save it as a 'xls' (97-2003 compatible) file? Yeah, but it ends up as ~14 MB. What the... Copy and paste the data'n'stuff into a fresh 'xls' book and then save that (a right pain in the bum considering the amount of books/sheets)? It ends up as ~5 MB.
Any ideas? Apart from 'Microsoft are shite' of course.
ETA: Have managed to get the original file down to 1.3 and the conversion to 5 (same as the manual cut'n'paste) by copying data between sheets to eliminate the blank rows/columns it somehow thought it should include. This leads me to believe it's possible that they've just improved their file compression in the latest version. Would need to c'n'p on an original 2003/97 software copy to be sure.
