Maquia 2012.09 time! This is really an interesting piece and I'm sure you'll be eager to watch Ore Ore movie as soon as possible after reading it! :D

Why sad? Following your reasoning, shouldn't you be happy? It means he can - therefore that he isn't a mediocre actor, he can still surprise you. :)
Going on a tangent, there's a reason I sometimes pity Kame for being an idol, and many Maquias explain why: too much often "idol" equals "cage" or "prejudice". Sadly the roles that were entrusted to Kame are clearly made to be given to a Johnny's. Ryu, Shuji, Hiroto, Kyohei... as much as I love all of them, they're all roles that require the "cool" vibe. I think he isn't wrong when he says that he was required to be like that. It was the character, moreover Japanese audience doesn't expect an idol to act differently. And this is exactly why I'm grateful for this OreOre chance, he can finally give expression to his acting talent - and I think he has a lot of it: seeing him acting live is a sort of illumination. But until now no one thought of polishing his skills while making him free from that cage called "idol". Probably Miki is really the first one, as Kame himself says here.
Side note, just to be clear about my translation: he says that he was playing those characters "earnestly/seriously". I don't want to convey the wrong message ^^''' the fact he "cannot let go of himself" doesn't mean he was acting half-assed. He said he properly played the role, but left a small "Kamenashi" somewhere :) A sort of "where's Wally - Kamenashi version" lol xD
(Long reply~ but to sum up: I see your point and I partially agree, but don't read what he said as disappointing, just as he still hasn't shown you all he can do - and his real acting XD)
Oh definitely happy! I just meant.. like sad because he was somehow stopping himself from truly acting because of people's expectations of him.
My first drama of him was Nobuta and I thought he was good and had the potential to be.. well. great. But I watched his other dramas and I was a bit disappointed because I thought he wasn't going all out. And so I kinda formed the opinion that he doesn't have the ability to go all out, as in 100% being the character so that all you can see when you watch is just the character with no bits of Kame in it. I understand though how people would rather 'see' Kame and not just the character?
So my ~feelings~ lies in the fact that he himself thought he had to leave in a bit of Kamenashi in his roles to please the staff/fans . Isn't it kinda sad that while he was concentrating on his role, another part of him is like, don't go all out, show a bit of Kamenashi somewhere in there too.
Now I'm just really really excited about OreOre because it seems Kame just concentrated on his roles without thinking of anything else, just the role. If I were in Japan I think I'd go creep on Miki Satoshi and sob and cry on his shoulders for helping Kame polish his acting skills, as you said. :')
(akjshfdjkf, sorry, I can get rambly when it comes to Kame)
Oh in that meaning! Sorry xD Now I see where you come from. You're right, it's very sad to think that he was the first one limiting his concentration and character built process. I actually hope that in his next drama he'll stop doing this, but for the same reason said before, I doubt ir. I think we've more possibilities to see the real actor!Kame in movies and with crazy directors like Miki. But we can still hope :D I've always complained Kame's characters lack of variation, and then oreore and its 25 roles appears~

(don't worry, I get rambly too as you see~ xD and anyway, thanks for the comments, it was a pleasure to read your PoV :D)
